It has been well documented several times on the current Angels' Top 30 that this organization likes rolling the dice on high-end high school pitchers in later rounds of the Draft. In 2025, they did it five times, acquiring a group that included LaCourse in Round 6, making him the first Michigander prep pitcher to be taken in the top 10 rounds since Brock Porter was a fourth-rounder in 2022. The Angels went about $120,000 over slot to sign the right-hander away from his commitment to Michigan State.
LaCourse’s size, projection and feel for spin all stood out to the Angels scouting staff. The 6-foot-3 starter routinely hits elite spin rate levels with his slider, registering consistently north of 3,000 RPMs with what could be a true out-pitch in time. While he had touched 93-94 mph in short stints in high school, he was more around 88-92 mph with his fastball as a starter, though Angels player development staff have been pleased to see that his velocity is starting to creep up. He throws the heater with a lot of spin for good carry up in the zone to miss bats. His changeup has also improved under pro supervision in the early going.
A strong athlete who played basketball in the winter and shortstop when he wasn’t pitching as a prepster, LaCourse does an excellent job of filling up the strike zone with all of his offerings. If the early gains are for real and he can continue to add strength and velocity, he could turn into an inning-eating starter in the future.
