The Yankees purchased Serna from the Mexican League's Yucatan Lions in May 2021, handing him a $50,000 bonus two years after signing his cousin Jared Serna, an infielder whom they eventually shipped to the Marlins in a July 2024 trade for Jazz Chisholm Jr. After pitching well in Rookie ball in his first two pro seasons, Luis dealt with shoulder issues in 2023 and an elbow injury in '24 that required Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for much of last year. He finally reached High-A to open this season and has performed well there.

Serna owns one of the best changeups in the system, an upper-70s offering with plenty of fade and sink that works against both lefties and righties. He sets it up with a 91-95 mph fastball that plays up a bit thanks to some carry and armside run. He doesn't have great feel for spin and his tight low-80s slider is fringy at best.

Listed at just 5-foot-11 and 162 pounds, Serna will have to prove he has the durability to handle a back-of-the-rotation role. He has a clean delivery and provides regular strikes, though his three-quarters delivery doesn't stand out in terms of release height or extension. While his mechanics don't provide a lot of deception, he tunnels his pitches well.

Signed from the Mexican League's Yucatan Lions in May 2021, Serna landed a $50,000 bonus and has excelled ever since. He posted a 2.25 ERA in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League in his pro debut and a 1.96 mark in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League last summer. He topped the FCL with 56 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings, while whiffing 32 percent of the batters he faced. 

Serna has confounded younger hitters with a mid-70s changeup that drops at the plate and has huge velocity separation from his fastball. His heater operates at 90-91 mph and reaches 93 and he could throw harder if he adds more strength to his small frame. His sweeping upper-70s slider stands out more for its spin rates than its power and he also throws a mid-70s curveball with more depth. 

Serna has a clean delivery, throws strikes, misses bats and generates weak ground ball contact. Listed at just 5-foot-11 and 162 pounds, he'll have to prove he can handle a starter's workload over a full season. He has gained nearly 20 pounds since turning pro and is the most polished of the Yankees' teenage pitchers.

He breezed through the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League after signing and gave up just one earned run in his first month in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League in 2022. 

Serna's best pitch is a mid-70s changeup that tumbles at the plate and has big velocity separation from his fastball. His heater sits at 90-91 mph and tops out at 93, and while he lacks size at 5-foot-11, he has room to add strength and could add more velo in the future. His slider stands out more for its high spin rates than its power and features the sweeping action that New York emphasizes, and he also mixes in a curveball with more depth as well. 

Serna has the potential for a solid four-pitch repertoire. He throws strikes, misses bats and elicits plenty of ground-ball contact. He has added nearly 20 pounds since joining the Yankees and is one of their more intriguing teenage arms.
