Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 45 | Splitter: 55 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Martinez-Gomez pitched one season each at San Bernardino Valley (Calif.) JC and Temple (Texas) JC before the Cubs signed him for an under-slot $100,000 in the 10th round, using some of the savings to land since-traded Zyhir Hope with their next pick. Used primarily as a reliever as a pro, he got torched in his debut and spent most of his first two seasons in Rookie ball. He broke out in 2025 with a 1.46 ERA and 29 percent strikeout rate at two Class A stops, which may earn him a chance to show what he can do as a starter this year.

The key to Martinez-Gomez's success was developing a low-80 splitter that's a weapon, as he does an excellent job on killing spin before it dives under barrels. The splitter plays well off his fastball, which parks at 93-95 mph and touches 97 with sink and armside run. He also spins a fringy slider in the low 80s.

Martinez-Gomez's athleticism helps him get down the mound well and create extension in his delivery, though it hasn't helped him repeat mechanics well enough to provide regular strikes. He has a career 16 percent walk rate in pro ball before slicing that mark to 6 percent at High-A during last season's final month. If he can maintain average control, he might become a back-of-the-rotation option.
