Gutierrez signed with the Padres for $750,000 out of Venezuela on July 31, 2019 -- the day he turned 16 years old. The timing couldn’t have been tougher since he missed out on a professional debut in 2020 due to the pandemic and repeated the Dominican Summer League in 2021 and 2022. He was still at Single-A Lake Elsinore to begin 2025 but zoomed up all four full-season levels, posting a 3.31 ERA with 115 strikeouts in 125 innings. 

The 6-foot left-hander showed he could spot his 91-95 mph fastballs extremely well, and he added a little extra zip to touch 97 in his age-21 season. The sinker he showed in his one Triple-A start was in the deadzone, and the life on his four-seamer wasn’t all that much better, so Gutierrez needs to land those on a dime to be effective as he pushes toward San Diego. His low-80s slider shows nice depth, and it’s a pitch that he can glide nicely away from lefties. An upper-80s changeup has similar armside movement to the sinker but more drop; however, it wasn’t quite as effective against righties as it needs to be.

No one will accuse the southpaw of overthrowing any time soon, as his delivery looks relatively free and easy albeit maybe a bit rushed in its final movements. He sets up on the extreme first-base side of the rubber, giving that slider the full width of the plate over which to break. Gutierrez may have gone unprotected and unpicked in last year’s Rule 5 Draft, for which he was eligible, but he’s still young at only 22 entering 2026. With the right adjustments, he could be a part of San Diego’s MLB depth soon.


2020

Gutierrez was the second-highest-ranked left-handed pitcher on MLB Pipeline’s list of the Top 30 international prospects in the 2019-20 class, checking in at No. 29 overall. The advanced feel for three pitches he showed as a Venezuelan amateur caught the attention of the Padres, who inked Gutierrez for $75,000 on his 16th birthday. He participated in San Diego’s fall instruction program in 2020. 

Gutierrez's fastball currently sits between 87-90 mph, though his remaining physical projection makes him a candidate to add a bit more velocity. His 12-to-6 curveball flashes plus and could develop into an out pitch as he continues to refine his skills. The changeup sits in the lower 80s and has good cutting action, though he does throw it a little too firmly at times.

Gutierrez has a calm, easy delivery from a lower arm slot that he repeats well. The clean arm action and extension also allow him to throw a high percentage of strikes. While he may not develop into a top-of-the-line ace due to his middling velocity, Gutierrez has the tools to pitch in the Major Leagues.
