Gastelum signed with the Cardinals for only $30,000 out of Mexico as a 21-year-old in April 2023 and headed stateside immediately. His big emergence came a year later when he posted a 2.81 ERA and struck out 34.5 percent of batters faced over 48 innings at Single-A Palm Beach, and he continued to dominate in the Mexican Winter League after that. The Cardinals pushed Gastelum past High-A for his age-23 season in 2025, and while his 4.02 ERA didn’t pop on the surface, his 35.4 percent K rate and 1.10 WHIP still did. Gastelum’s 28.8 K/BB percentage was sixth-best among 952 Minor Leaguers with at least 60 innings in ’25.
Gastelum’s success to this point stems from one pitch: his low-80s changeup. It’s a mesmerizing offering with negative induced vertical break and plenty of armside run. It practically works like a left-handed breaking ball, but instead emerges from the 6-foot-2 right-hander’s low three-quarters delivery. Because of that action, the cambio was even more effective against righties than lefties last year with a 64 percent whiff rate against same-side bats. (Not that lefties fared that much better.) Gastelum can throw a mid-90s fastball, but with ordinary movement, it only works to set up his beast of a change. He’ll occasionally work in a mid-80s sweeper too for something with big gloveside movement.
Gastelum has posted excellent walk rates at every stop to this point, and a big reason for that is that he consistently gets batters to bite on changeups diving out of the zone. He pitches exclusively out of the stretch, so this isn’t a complicated operation. Without an average fastball, Gastelum might have a limited ceiling, but his uniqueness should earn him some role in St. Louis’ bullpen soon.

Gastelum fanned three of his four batters faced (including the final one) in Palm Beach’s FSL championship clincher on Sept. 18, and he’s continued his momentum in the Mexican Winter League.
The 6-foot-2 right-hander proved so dominant because of his special changeup. The 81-84 mph cambio averaged -1.6 inches of induced vertical break and 15.5 inches of armside movement, giving it two planes with which to menace hitters. Gastelum threw 317 changeups tracked by Statcast; 161 of them (50.8 percent) ended up as called strikes or whiffs. No one else in the FSL had a CSW rate higher than 41.1 percent (min. 50 changeups), and no one in the Majors had one higher than 41.0 (Angel Chivili) over the same minimum. Gastelum threw his change 47.9 percent of the time because it was so effective.
The other side of the coin: the righty’s fastball is much less remarkable as a 91-93 mph offering with ordinary movement, and his mid-80s slider is the closest pitch to flashing above-average. Devin Williams comps would be misguided because at least the Yankees reliever has more fastball velo and usage, but that type of change-heavy profile out of the bullpen gives the righty a profile on which to dream. The Cards prospect will be 23 for the majority of the 2025 season, so it’ll be time for St. Louis to see just how quickly he can ride that changeup toward The Show.
