Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 60 | Overall: 40

Meola was named Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament MVP as a sophomore after homering three times in four games and earned ASUN defensive player of the year accolades as a junior in 2025. The cousin of former U.S. national soccer team goalie Tony Meola, he went in the fourth round, making him Stetson's highest-drafted position player since 2003 first-rounder Brian Johnson. He took over at shortstop for an injured Maui Ahuna at Single-A San Jose and helped win a California League title.

With solid speed and quick feet, Meola covers plenty of ground at shortstop. His smooth actions, soft hands and strong arm help make him a plus defender at short. Factor in some sneaky power, and some Giants officials think he has J.J. Hardy upside.

Meola hits the ball surprisingly hard for a 5-foot-11, 172-pounder and can drive the ball out of the park to all fields, giving him the potential for 15-20 homers per season. He does get overly aggressive and pull-happy, however, resulting in strikeouts and rolled-over ground balls. He's most effective when he focuses on driving balls from gap to gap.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 60 | Overall: 40

A cousin of former U.S. National soccer team goalie Tony Meola, Lorenzo was a steady performer for three years at Stetson. He won Atlantic Sun Conference tournament MVP honors as a sophomore after homering three times in four games and earned league Defensive Player of the Year accolades as a junior this spring. The Giants selected him in the fourth round -- making him the Hatters' highest-drafted hitter since 2003 first-rounder Brian Johnson -- and signed him for $652,200.

Meola's solid speed and quick footwork give him plus range at shortstop. He also has fluid actions, soft hands and a strong arm, leaving no doubt that he can stick at short in pro ball. His tools would allow him to handle a variety of positions if he becomes a utility man rather than a regular.

A right-handed hitter, Meola is at his best when he focuses on drilling line drives from gap to gap. He makes decent swing decisions and rarely swings-and-misses when he doesn't stray from the strike zone. He won't be a slugger but could produce 12-15 homers per season, including some occasional opposite-field pop.

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 60 | Overall: 40

A starter at Stetson right out of the gate when the New Jersey high school product arrived at the Florida school’s campus, Meola -- who is a cousin of famed USA soccer goalkeeper Tony Meola -- has done nothing but perform over three years for the Hatters. The infielder won ASUN Tournament MVP honors as a sophomore, then was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year and earned first-team All-Conference honors this spring.

Meola keeps everything simple on both sides of the ball. While he tried to do a little too much early this spring, leading to more swing-and-miss than usual, he typically makes a lot of contact from the right side of the plate and really turned things up a notch in conference play this year. He’s never going to be a huge power guy, but he can impact the ball, showing some ability to backspin it out of the park to the middle of the field, with 12-15 homer potential at the next level.

An above-average runner, Meola’s standout skills come on the dirt. He has outstanding footwork and hands and covers a ton of ground, giving him plus grades on his defense. Combine that with a strong and accurate arm, and he definitely has the goods to play shortstop for a long time. He might be a bottom-of-the-lineup glove-first type of big leaguer eventually, but he could be more than that if the bat develops and he’s the kind of player winning teams always seem to have on their roster.
