After redshirting during his first year at Texas in 2021, Johnson pitched well out of the Longhorns bullpen the following year. He took a big step forward as a starter in 202, but rolled the dice when he turned down offers in that summer’s Draft to return to campus for one last season. He wasn’t able to build off the his excellent work down the stretch of the previous year, but the Rockies were intrigued enough by his size and arm strength to take him in the fifth round of the 2024 Draft and sign him for a full-slot bonus of $500,000. The club then sent him to Single-A Fresno to start his pro career in 2025.
At 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Johnson certainly looks the part and shows glimpses of big league starter stuff. While he sat around 93-95 mph at Texas, he was parking his fastball more in the 94-97 mph range in the early stages of his pro career. It’s shown some good action at the bottom of the zone and has generally been harder to square up than in school last year. His upper-80s slider with two-plane depth could be a real separator, already missing a ton of bats, and his firm mid-80s splitter with late action has been more consistently nasty during his first pro season.
With an upright, high-tempo delivery and high arm slot, it remains to be seen if Johnson will be able stick in a rotation, and he struggles with landing his stuff in the zone enough for him to pitch deeper into games. The Rockies will keep letting him work on his command and full repertoire as a starter for the time being, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone if he ends up in the bullpen at some point.

Johnson redshirted in his first season at Texas before claiming a bullpen role in 2022. He has emerged as the Longhorns' No. 2 starter in 2023 and has gotten better as the year has progressed, posting a 1.88 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings over his last five regular-season starts. A team that envisions Johnson remaining in the rotation in pro ball could select him as high as the third or fourth round.
Johnson's strikeout pitch is an upper-80s slider that reaches 92 mph, and hitters repeatedly flail at it and chase it out of the zone. He sets it up with a 93-95 mph fastball that peaks at 98 with some modest arm-side run, though it flattens out and gets hit at higher velocities. His 88-92 mph splitter flashes some devastating tumble, but he struggles to land it for strikes.
Texas pitching coach and former All-Star Woody Williams has helped Johnson add polish since he arrived in Austin, especially in terms of his control, which graded as average during his late-season run. But scouts do have concerns about an up-tempo and upright delivery that helps him stay on top of his slider but costs him extension and deception. He'll get a chance to start as a pro but projects more as a slider-heavy reliever.
