Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40
The Padres were considered one of the three finalists for 2025’s top international prospect Roki Sasaki, only to see the Japanese right-hander sign with the NL West rival Dodgers. San Diego still signed three members of MLB Pipeline’s Top 50 international prospects in Carlos Alvarez, Deivid Coronil and Jhoan De La Cruz but managed to have international pool money left over come October when it signed Su for $775,000. The Taiwanese right-hander had most recently pitched for Chinese Taipei in the 18U World Cup in Japan in September, when he struck out 14 batters and held opposing batters to a .192 average in 7 1/3 innings.
Drawing comparisons to fellow past top international signing Humberto Cruz, Su is super projectable at 6-foot-1 and a rail-thin 150 pounds at the time of signing. His fastball works 89-94 mph right now, but there is ample room for that velocity to jump as he adds strength within the Padres development program. He showed good feel for spin with a pair of breakers in his upper-70s curveball and 79-83 mph slider in the World Cup, and there were the makings of a decent changeup that he can sell well out of the hand, though it was a distant fourth offering in terms of usage.
Because he isn’t overthrowing, Su has a natural feel for throwing strikes, and that will aid his starting chances as he moves stateside. Maintaining that control while adding a few ticks of velocity will be key in the early years of his career, but at a time when the farm system needs depth after years of aggressive trades, the Padres are excited to add Su to their pitching depth.
