Nate Eaton, a hitter who touched the big leagues in 2022 and 2023, went in Round 21 of the 2018 Draft to the Royals out of Virginia Military Institute. His younger cousin, Konner, is a left-handed pitcher who went from the Virginia high school ranks to George Mason. After throwing just one inning during his freshman year, he moved into the Patriots’ rotation as a sophomore and has remained there, teasing with his raw stuff over two years, and in the Cape Cod League, without the consistent results to go with it.
Eaton has an intriguing combination of size -- he’s 6-foot-3 -- stuff, athleticism and left-handedness. He has a lively fastball he can run up to 94 mph, averaging around 92, with solid inverted vertical break. He complements it with a slider that is often above-average, albeit inconsistent. It's a low-80s sweeping breaking ball that can miss bats. He has a mid-80s changeup also comes and goes, but looks like it could be a third at least average pitch.
The left-hander is athletic and offers some deception in his delivery, but his control and command are elusive. He’s throwing more strikes than he did in 2023 or in the Cape Cod League last summer, though his overall performance has been a bit of a roller coaster. Teams that have seen him good and think they can unlock enough consistency to start may give him a shot in the top five rounds.

After barely pitching as a freshman at George Mason University, Eaton moved into the Patriots’ rotation in his sophomore year and stayed there for two seasons. Both there and out of the bullpen in the Cape Cod League in 2023, the big left-hander showed off glimpses of good raw stuff that can miss bats while struggling to find the strike zone consistently. The Rockies thought there was enough to work with to take him in the sixth round of the 2024 Draft and the early returns -- as a reliever after signing and back in a rotation during the start of his first full season -- have been encouraging.
At 6-foot-3, Eaton’s combination of size and athleticism have long intrigued scouts. While he typically runs his fastball up to about 94 mph, it can miss bats with solid inverted vertical break. His low-80s sweeping slider is an above-average breaking ball that can serve as an out pitch at times, and while his changeup has been inconsistent in the past, it’s a third effective offering for the southpaw.
After walking 5.0 per nine innings over the course of his George Mason career, there were questions about Eaton’s ability to start long term. He was finding the zone much more consistently at the outset of his pro career, and if that continues along with his three-pitch mix, he does have the chance to stick in a rotation. If not, the fastball-slider combination could play up coming out of the 'pen in shorter stints.
