Undrafted coming out of high school despite being a standout in the Louisiana area and as a Breakthrough Series alum, Huggins continued his baseball career at Chipola Junior College in Florida, where he became teammates with Cam Collier. The two went on to be Draft classmates for the Reds in 2022, with Collier going to Cincinnati in the first round and Huggins in the fourth. After Tommy John surgery in June 2023, he returned near the end of the ‘24 campaign. Beginning the 2025 season at Single-A Daytona, he was dealt to the A’s at last year’s Trade Deadline for Miguel Andujar, finishing his season at High-A Lansing.
Huggins has an electric arm with a fastball that can reach up to 97 mph and sits 95-96. His hard slider is by far his most effective secondary pitch. He also recently reintroduced an upper-80s changeup into his repertoire. All this comes from a high release point that creates some good deception.
Command has been an issue for Huggins in the past, though he seems to be emerging as more of a consistent strike thrower the further removed from surgery he gets. He’ll get a chance to continue starting for now, but his limited pitch mix could lead to him in a bullpen role long term.

Huggins was a Louisiana high school standout and Breakthrough Series alum who headed to Chipola Junior College in Florida after going undrafted as a prepster. Playing alongside Cam Collier at Chipola that year certainly helped. The Reds took Collier in the first round, then nabbed Huggins in the fourth. It’s been uphill sledding for the right-hander, with Tommy John surgery in June 2023 keeping out until the very end of the '24 season. He started to figure things out in 2025, the third season he spent with Single-A Daytona, though he earned a promotion to High-A Dayton in late July, just ahead of him being sent to the A’s in the Miguel Andujar Trade Deadline deal.
A strong and athletic 6-foot-3 right-hander, Huggins has the chance to have a solid three-pitch mix. He’s always had a power arm and his fastball now averages better than 94 mph, touching 97. He backs up the heater with a hard slider he throws in the 86-91 mph range, and has decent feel for an 87-91 mph changeup, producing a 33 percent miss rate combined with Daytona in 2025.
While command was an issue for Huggins at Chipola and at the outset of his Reds career, he’s been throwing more consistent strikes with the surgery fully behind him. How much he can develop his secondaries will likely determine what his ultimate role is.

An alumni of Major League Baseball’s Breakthrough Series, Huggins was one of Louisiana’s better high school prospects and he attended MLB’s first Draft combine in 2021. After going undrafted, Huggins switched gears from his initial commitment to Louisiana Tech and headed to Chipola Junior College. While he certainly benefitted from the presence of potential first-rounder Cam Collier in the lineup, he did plenty to help himself as a dependable member of Chipola’s rotation all spring.
A 6-foot-3 right-hander with a strong and athletic frame, Huggins steadily improved as the year went on. He has the chance to eventually have two plus pitches in his fastball and slider. His heater touches the mid-90s now and sits around 93 mph, and it’s particularly effective when run down in the zone. He misses a ton of bats with his mid-80s slider, and while he gets hitters to chase it often, he does a solid job of landing it for strikes. He does have a changeup that might be an effective third pitch, but he doesn’t throw it much and there will need to be more velocity separation from his fastball.
In addition to that third pitch, Huggins will also need to refine his command. While he struck out nearly 12 per nine this spring, he also walked close to four per nine. He’s still only 19 and given the strides he made this year, it wouldn’t be surprising if a team rolled the dice on his upside in the top several rounds.
