Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Morfe wasn’t a headliner of the Orioles’ 2023 international class, signing for $207,500 out of Venezuela as an undersized right-hander, and he struggled to throw strikes in his Dominican Summer League debut later that year. But he made a big leap forward in 2024, proving quickly he was too good for the DSL in his second go-around there before finishing the year with four starts at Single-A Delmarva as an 18-year-old. He racked up 49 strikeouts over 32 2/3 innings across the two levels, the equivalent of 13.5 strikeouts per nine.

Morfe surprised a lot of evaluators with his ascent last summer and has surprisingly high-octane stuff for a pitcher his size. He only stands around 5-foot-8 but can dial his fastball up near triple digits, and it consistently lives in the upper 90s. What Morfe lacks in height he makes up for in athleticism and flexibility, using those qualities in tandem with a whippy arm to generate velocity that belies his size. His two secondary offerings are both hard, too: a mid-80s sweeping slider that can miss bats and a low-90s changeup with fade. The change especially showed big improvement last summer, going from a fringy offering to a potential plus pitch.

It’s an advanced arsenal in an unpolished package, as Morfe’s command remains a work in progress. That’s not unusual for a young power pitcher, and Morfe was better at throwing strikes last year than his stats might imply because they were skewed by one ugly blow up start at the very end of the season. His three plus pitches and bulldog mentality remind some evaluators of Carlos Martinez, but to reach that ceiling, Morfe will need to prove he can throw enough strikes and that his body can handle a starter’s workload.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

The Orioles handed out a dozen bonuses if six digits or higher at the start of the 2023 international signing bonuses, headlined by Luis Almeyda’s $1.2 million and including current Top 30 prospect Joshua Liranzo, who got close to $500,000. Down the list bonus-wise a little was Morfe, who received $207,500 to join the organization in January of 2023. After struggling to throw strikes in his Dominican Summer League debut last summer, he’s taken a big step forward in harnessing his stuff back in the DSL this year.

An undersized right-hander who’s only about 5-foot-9, Morfe has a live and strong arm that belies his size. Super athletic with a loose, flexible body and whippy arm, Morfe consistently parks his fastball in the upper-90s and touches triple-digits in just about every outing. He complements it with a hard slider that can miss bats, and while his changeup is his third pitch, he’s committed to throwing it, and it’s improved considerably.

Like with many young power pitchers, Morfe’s command is still a work in progress, but he’s found the strike zone a lot more consistently in 2024. He has a bulldog mentality and goes right after hitters, showing calm under pressure. Durability remains the question for someone his size, but the Orioles see three potential plus pitches and a chance to start, reminding some of a Carlos Martinez type.
