Wherever Anthony has been, he’s hit. Over two years at Iowa, he posted a combined .372/.476/.686 line, but he wasn’t drafted because he had been suspended for betting on college sports (not his own team). Since the Phillies signed him as a nondrafted free agent in the summer of 2023 for $125,000, he’s continued to rake, making his way all the way to Triple-A in 2025 and carrying a career .324/.402/.467 line as a pro into the 2026 season.

Anthony is a smart right-handed hitter with a knack for contact. He limits his swing-and-miss, with a career 17.8 percent miss rate as proof, and loves going the other way for base hits. He’s cleaned up his body and added some strength, registering better hard-hit rates last year, and he can drive the ball to all fields for extra bases. But he has a tendency to hit the ball on the ground too much, and his chase rate (38 percent) went up when he went to Triple-A. He’s a hit-over-power guy for sure, but finding a bit more loft and leverage would help.

That’s because he’s limited to first base only, putting pressure on him to be more of a run producer. He’s a fine defender at first, but he’s not super athletic, and the right-right profile at the position is tough. Because of that, he gives off some Darin Ruf type vibes, and Ruf did carve out a career that included parts of nine seasons in the big leagues.

After hitting .372 over two years at the University of Iowa, Anthony almost certainly would have been drafted at some point in 2023, but he didn’t hear his name called after 20 rounds because he had been suspended for betting on college sports (not his own team). The Phillies gave him an opportunity as a nondrafted free agent, signing him for $125,000. He’s done nothing but hit since, reaching Triple-A for the first time in 2025.

A right-handed hitter, Anthony continues to build his resume as one of the best pure hitters in the Phillies system. He’s a very smart hitter who makes a lot of contact, limiting his swing-and-miss and keeping his chasing out of the zone to a minimum while drawing walks. While he does hit the ball on the ground too much, he is capable of elevating at times. He needed to add physical strength to drive the ball more and he’s done that, as evidenced by an uptick in his hard-hit rate in 2025, though he’ll always be hit-over-power.

Anthony won a Minor League Gold Glove for his defensive work at first base in 2024, but the question will be if he can impact the ball enough to profile at an infield corner as a big league regular. His feel for the barrel should allow him to carve out a big league career.
