Originally signed by the Padres out of the Dominican Republic for $300,000 at the start of the 2017-18 international signing period, Perez was traded to the A’s as the player to be named later in the 2020 deal that sent Jorge Mateo to the Padres. It took him a while, but Perez finally showed signs of putting all his tools together last season, turning in his best work with Triple-A Las Vegas and earning a spot on the A’s 40-man roster.
Perez is capable of making quality contact with his swing and has tapped into his power more over the past year. He does come with a good amount of swing-and-miss, something that he continues to work hard at to try to get more under control. He has also shown the ability to draw a decent amount of walks.
Defense is a standout tool for Perez, with some within the A’s organization ranking his glove in center field as on par with defensive wizard Denzel Clarke. Perez brings good range and a strong arm that allows him to play all three outfield positions, while his speed is also a plus on the bases. It remains to be seen if Perez can overcome his swing-and-miss issues, but he is now firmly on the big league radar after his breakout year.

Perez signed at the start of the 2017-18 international period with the Padres for $300,000 out of the Dominican Republic and showed plenty of upside early on. After a slow start in the Dominican Summer League, he went to the rookie-level Arizona League at the age of 17 and shined by hitting .268 with 11 homers and 11 stolen bases. That performance caught the attention of the A’s, who ultimately landed him as the player to be named later from the Padres in exchange for Jorge Mateo in 2020.
Perez is dealing with the typical swing-and-miss issues that most young players go through, but he has shown an ability to make quality contact often with a quick and lofty swing. He runs the bases well, and his big 6-foot-1 frame suggests he could develop even more power once he fills out.
There were high hopes for Perez when he first joined the organization, though the overall product has been a bit underwhelming to this point with inconsistent flashes of his many tools. Still, youth is definitely on his side, and the A’s are looking forward to working with him a bit more. His slightly above-average arm projects him as a left fielder, though he’s shown capable of playing both corner spots.

Perez showed plenty of upside when the Padres signed the Dominican outfielder for $300,000 at the start of the 2017-18 international period. Despite slashing just .176/.354/.270 with 80 strikeouts in 61 games in his first pro season in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League, his knack for squaring up the ball impressed the club. Playing in the Rookie-level Arizona League in 2019 at age 17, Perez showed vast improvement as he hit .268/.349/.512 and tied for second-most in the league with 11 homers. That impressive bat enticed the A’s enough to nab him as the player to be named later in the 2020 deal that sent Jorge Mateo to the Padres.
Perez could develop into a strong power bat given his physical frame. Like most young players, he’s still working through some swing-and-miss issues. That said, Perez does make a lot of quality contact with his quick bat and lofty swing.
He has played mostly right field since 2019 and is destined for a corner outfield spot due to below-average speed. Perez's slightly above-average arm probably makes left field a better fit for the long term.

Signed by the Padres for $300,000 out of the Dominican Republic at the outset of the 2017-18 July 2 international period, Perez showed plenty of upside with his mature build and knack for squaring up the baseball during his first pro season in the Dominican Summer League, despite batting just .176/.354/.270 with 80 strikeouts in 61 games. The Padres still deemed Perez worthy of a greater challenge in 2019 and assigned him to the Rookie Arizona League, where, at age 17, he posted a much-improved batting line of .268/.349/.512 and hit 11 home runs, finishing tied for second in the circuit. The A’s clearly noticed, acquiring him in November as the player to be named later in the June Jorge Mateo deal.
That Perez possesses a strong, physical frame for a teenager makes it easy to dream on his power potential from the right side of the plate. He also makes a lot of quality contact, combining his strength with a quick bat and lofty swing. His swing-and-miss issues aren’t uncommon for a player his age and stand to improve as he gains experience and learns to recognize spin better.
Perez’s below-average speed limits him to an outfield corner, and he spent much of his 2019 campaign manning right field in the AZL. He may be a better long-term fit in left, though, because his arm strength is only a tick above average.
