Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40
One of the youngest college pitchers selected in the 2023 Draft, Grosz didn't turn 21 until six weeks after signing with the Yankees for $150,000 as an 11th-rounder. The East Carolina product fanned 131 batters in 121 2/3 innings during his 2024 pro debut while spending most of his time at two Class A stops. He ranked among the High-A South Atlantic League strikeout leaders this season as part of a prospect-studded rotation at Hudson Valley when he was sent to the Rockies along with Griffin Herring in the July trade for Ryan McMahon.
Grosz has added a couple of ticks of velocity to his fastball since turning pro and now works at 93-95 mph and touches 98 with quality riding action. He creates high spin rates on his heater and his mid-80s slider, and the Yankees have helped him increase the break on the latter pitch. His upper-80s changeup is firm yet effective because its fade and sink keep left-handers at bay.
The 6-foot-4 Grosz mixes an upright delivery with a low three-quarters arm slot. He has fringy control and command, and his fastball is his lone better-than-average offering. He has the ceiling of a back-of-the-rotation starter and could end up as a multi-inning reliever.
Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 45 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40
Grosz has an unusual claim to fame, getting ejected from one game and suspended for another in May for feeding a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to a teammate who had just homered, which an umpire deemed violated the NCAA's rules against celebratory props. On the mound, he continually improved throughout his three years at East Carolina and appeals to clubs who believe he can continue to get better. He has feel for four pitches, though none of them nor his control grade as better than average.
Grosz's best weapon is a tight 82-85 mph slider that can be a plus offering at its best. He switched from a sinker to a four-seam fastball this year, operating at 91-94 mph and touching 96 with some arm-side run and carry. Those are his two primary pitches, and he also mixes in a firm upper-80s changeup with fade and sink and a curveball that parks around 80 mph.
Carrying just 199 pounds on his 6-foot-4 frame, Grosz has room to add more muscle and thus more power to his stuff. Getting stronger also could help him upgrade his fringy control and command. He's more of a player-development project than a typical college starter but eventually might fill a No. 4 or 5 spot in a rotation.
