Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 60 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Texas high school powerhouse The Woodlands has produced five Major Leaguers, including Paul Goldschmidt and Jameson Taillon, and Ekness was on teams' radars there in 2020 but ultimately was not selected in the shortened five-round Draft. Instead, he went Lamar and then Houston, striking out enough hitters that the Marlins overlooked his 6.34 ERA across three seasons and signed him for $150,000 as a 2023 12th-rounder. Ekness' stuff took a leap in pro ball after he fully committed to relieving, and he racked up 68 strikeouts in 54 innings in 2025, albeit with 26 walks, mostly at Double-A.

The 6-foot-4 right-hander lives up to his "Ekness Monster" nickname between his size, demeanor on the mound and impressive stuff. Ekness attacks hitters from a low-three-quarters arm slot with a cross-bodied delivery that is difficult to pick up on. His four-seamer tops out at 99 mph and gained half a tick of velocity at the start of 2026. That added heat has helped his mid-80s sweeper play up for plenty of whiffs and chases.

Ekness also can show an upper-90s sinker against righties and a shorter upper-80s slider to all batters, although the fastball-sweeper combination remains his bread and butter. Strike-throwing remains his one question mark. He tends to spray the ball and was only in the zone 45 percent of the time with a 64 percent strike rate in 2025. If he can get his walk rate comfortably below 10 percent, he could be a late-inning relief option.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Slider: 55 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Ekness showcased a big league body and live arm at the powerhouse prep program at The Woodlands (Texas), but his inability to find the strike zone left him undrafted in 2020. The same issue dogged him while he posted a 6.34 ERA in three college seasons at Lamar and Houston, but he has enjoyed much more consistent success since the Marlins drafted him in the 12th round in 2023 and made him a full-time reliever. He compiled a 1.91 ERA, .164 opponent average and 83 strikeouts in 66 innings while reaching Double-A in his first full pro season.

Ekness unleashes 96-98 mph and reaches 100 with armside run on his fastball, showing the ability to produce carry up in the zone or sink at the knees. His heaters elicit plenty of chases and swings and misses, and his sinking version can be downright unhittable. His slider combines mid-80s power with horizontal and vertical action, though he struggles to land it in the zone.

While Ekness creates deception with a low three-quarters arm slot and crossfire in his delivery, he also throws with some effort and his mechanics impede his control. He did cut his walk rate from 16 percent in college to 10 percent last year, encouraging progress. He could become a high-leverage reliever if he can harness his slider and provide more strikes.

Pitch Movement

How this works: This section shows two different ways to evaluate pitch movement. On the left, “Total Movement” shows the real-world movement of a pitch, including the forces of gravity, which affects every pitch thrown. Since gravity requires time, and slower pitches aren't 'better' just because they have more time to move, a pitch's movement is compared to other pitches of the same pitch type, within +/- 2 MPH and +/- 0.5 feet of extension/release. On the right, Induced Movement (or IVB) is reported without gravity, and attempts to isolate movement created by the pitcher's ability to spin and manipulate the ball.
