Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 60 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 50 | Overall: 40

Bostick and his older brother Marcus attended three junior colleges in three years, with Josh playing shortstop at Howard (Texas) in 2021, hitting and pitching at Hillsborough (Fla.) in 2022 and emerging as the best juco arm in Texas while at Grayson in 2023. He ranked third in the NCAA in strikeout rate (15.3 per nine innings) for the Vikings before signing for a double-slot $397,500 bonus as an eighth-rounder. He has led his circuits in strikeout percentage in his two pro seasons (26 percent in the Single-A California League in 2024, 28 percent in the High-A Northwest League last year), recovering from a rough start to log a 2.45 ERA in his final 11 starts in 2025.

Bostick can miss bats with four different pitches when they're on, starting with a low-80s slider with impressive sweep. It pairs nicely with a mid-90s fastball that reaches 99 with huge induced vertical break. He made progress last season with his upper-70s curveball and low-80s changeup, which both drop at the plate.

The Giants made changes to Bostick's delivery that spurred his second-half turnaround, moving his hands away from his body and changing his leg kick to enable him to get down the mound better and improve his extension. He works exclusively out of the strength, with his strength and athleticism allowing him to maintain his stuff and mechanics deep into games. He has only been a full-time pitcher for three years, so he has room to continue to improve, but his development will be put on hold after he ruptured an Achilles tendon while lifting weights during the offseason.

2025

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Bostick and his older brother Marcus attended three junior colleges in three years, with Josh playing shortstop at Howard (Texas) in 2021 and pulling double duty at Hillsborough (Fla.) in 2022 before establishing himself as the best juco arm in Texas while at Grayson College. He ranked third in the NJCAA with 15.3 strikeouts per nine innings in 2023, and the Giants believed in his combination of stuff, size, athleticism and data to give him a double-slot $397,500 bonus as an eighth-rounder. He broke into pro ball by leading the Single-A California League in strikeout rate (26 percent) last year.

Bostick blew away Cal League hitters with a four-seam fastball that parks at 92-96 mph, has reached triple digits in shorter stints and comes with significant induced vertical break and carry. His heater's movement pairs nicely with the depth on his sweeping low-80s slider, which can be a plus pitch when he commands it. He's gaining feel for his low-80s changeup with tumble as he uses it more regularly.

After working out of the stretch at Grayson, Bostick did the same last summer and threw a decent amount of strikes. His combination of strength and athleticism allows him to maintain his stuff deep into games and should help him refine his control and command. He comes with reliever risk but also just started focusing on pitching in 2023, so he has more room for development gains than most 23-year-olds.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Bostick teamed with his older brother Marcus at three different junior colleges in three years, playing shortstop at Howard (Texas) in 2021, pulling double duty at Hillsborough (Fla.) and emerging as the best juco arm in Texas while at Grayson County last spring. He ranked third in the NJCAA in strikeout rate (15.3 per nine innings) and the Giants appreciated his combination of stuff, size, athleticism and data enough to pay him a double-slot $397,500 bonus in the eighth round. His fastball touched 100 mph in short stints during his brief pro debut.

Bostick usually works with a 91-95 mph fastball and tops out at 99 as starter, and his strong 6-foot-4 frame enables him to hold his velocity deep into games. His low-80s slider features tremendous sweep at its best and gives him a solid second pitch. He does have some feel for a fading low-80s changeup but it needs more consistency.

Working relatively exclusively out of the stretch at Grayson, San Francisco may try to introduce a modified windup this year. Bostick does come with reliever risk but if he winds up in the bullpen, he might find more velocity and wind up with a plus fastball and slider.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Bostick has played with his older brother Marcus at three different junior colleges in the last three years. He started as a shortstop at Howard (Texas) JC in 2021, played both ways at Hillsborough (Fla.) CC last year and has emerged as the best junior college pitcher in Texas this spring at Grayson County CC. He ranked third in the NJCAA in strikeout rate with 15.3 per nine innings.

Bostick has a strong 6-foot-4 frame and maintains the velocity on his fastball deep into games, operating at 91-94 mph and reaching 97 with arm-side run and good carry when he works up in the zone. His low-80s slider gives him a second solid offering with some nasty sweep when it's on. His low-80s changeup lacks consistency but does feature some promising fade.

Still very much a work in progress on the mound, Bostick needs to smooth out his delivery and improve his strike-throwing. He works exclusively out of the stretch and while he lacks experience, he does show some feel for pitching. If he doesn't turn pro this summer, he'll transfer to Texas-Arlington.
