Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 40 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Ever since Olivares signed with the Twins out of Venezuela for $100,000 in January 2021, he’s teased with electric stuff, but not necessarily the performance to match. After a brief debut in the Dominican Summer League the summer after signing, he missed bats in the Florida Complex League. He spent the bulk of the 2023 and '24 seasons with Single-A Fort Myers, missing time in the latter year with a shoulder issue and hip impingement. He set a career high in innings with a move up to High-A Cedar Rapids in 2025, again with inconsistent results.

Olivares has the potential to have a legitimate four-pitch mix. The 6-foot-1 right-hander’s repertoire starts with a fastball that sits at around 95 mph and touched 99 last year, thrown with excellent carry. His upper-80s slider is short and hard, missing a lot of bats along the way. His changeup, also thrown in the 86-87 mph range, has been a third effective pitch while his 80 mph curve is clearly his fourth offering he has difficulty landing in the zone.

The lack of strikes has been the biggest thing holding Olivares back. While he gets swing-and-miss with all of his pitches, his walk rate climbed up to 5.7 BB/9 in 2025. The Twins left him exposed to the Rule 5 Draft and thought someone might roll the dice on his stuff, but the lack of control and command scared interested teams away. Now in his age-23 season, he’ll have to answer whether he can compete in the zone enough to remain as a starter, with the knowledge he’d have elite stuff in a bullpen.

Olivares joined the Twins for just $100,000 out of Venezuela in January 2021, the start of the delayed 2020-21 international signing period. He’s moved slowly, starting in the Dominican Summer League in 2022 and heading to the Florida Complex League the following summer. His move to full-season ball didn’t go so well in 2023, but he had much better results with a return to Fort Myers last year, even though he was slowed early by a shoulder issue and then missed time with a hip impingement.

A 6-foot-1 right-hander, Olivares could have four outstanding pitches if he keeps developing as he did in 2024. His fastball velocity increased from an average of 93 mph in 2023 to 95 mph this past year, touching 97 with really good riding life and armside run. He focused on developing more of a gyro slider with depth that also took a step forward, missing a ton of bats at around 87 mph. He folds in an 80 mph curve and has an interesting 86-87 mph changeup with movement that can miss bats too.

Olivares did a better job last year of finding the strike zone, but he needs to improve his control and command, especially struggling with landing his curve and changeup in the zone. There could be more strikeouts to come if he can refine that and his overall pitch execution as he'll be 22 for all of the 2025 season.

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 40 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

The start of the 2020-21 international signing period was delayed by the pandemic until January of 2021, and the Twins were ready, handing out a dozen bonuses of six figures or more, led by Danny De Andrade’s $2.2 million. At the bottom of the list was Olivares, who got $100,000 to sign out of Venezuela soon after the period opened. He’s moved one rung at a time, going from the Dominican Summer League in 2021 to the Florida Complex League in 2022 and then to full-season ball in 2023. A return to Fort Myers in 2024 yielded better results, though he missed time early with a shoulder issue and then July with a hip impingement, though he returned to finish the season strongly.

Compact and strong at 6-foot-1 and around 200 pounds, Olivares has the chance to have a legitimate four-pitch mix. His fastball averages around 95 mph, touching 97 mph, with good carry and spin. Both his 87 mph slider and his changeup thrown at around the same velocity are very effective, getting miss rates over 40 percent in the Florida State League this year. He can also mix in an 80-mph curve.

What Olivares needs more than anything is reps. He didn’t come close to matching his career high of 85 innings he set in 2023 because of injury, and he needs the mound time to help refine the overall command of his stuff. That would give him the chance to start, though his stuff would tick up in shorter stints out of the pen.
