Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 50 | Run: 20 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Garcia signed for $850,000 out of Venezuela in 2022 and was off to a hot start in Single-A two years later before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee while running the bases. He missed a year's worth of action before returning late last May and homering 12 times in 58 games, mostly in High-A. The Red Sox also signed his older brother Jhostynxon for $350,000 in 2019 and sent him to the Pirates in the Johan Oviedo trade last December.

Garcia's signature tool is his plus raw power, the product of prodigious strength, and he uses it well by consistently elevating balls to his pull side. There are questions about how much contact he'll make against advanced pitching, however, because he has a big leg kick, a right-handed stroke that gets too long and an aggressive approach. He chases all types of offerings out of the zone and swings through too many strikes.

Much heavier than his listed 196 pounds, Garcia gained weight during his layoff and has had trouble shedding it. He's a bottom-of-the-scale runner who isn't moving as well behind the plate as he was before he got hurt. He receives, frames and blocks well enough to become an average defender if he can regain some athleticism, and he features solid arm strength.

Three years after signing his older brother Jhostynxon Garcia out of Venezuela for $350,000, the Red Sox landed Johanfan for $850,000. He has become the best prospect from Boston's 2022 international class and batted .385/.467/.596 in the first month in Single-A before blowing out the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee running the bases. He had surgery in May and may not be quite ready for the start of the 2025 season.

Garcia stands out most with his plus raw power. He's very strong for his age, has good feel for driving the ball in the air and produces loud exit velocities. Despite his .286 average through three pro seasons, there are some questions about how well he'll hit against higher-level pitching. He employs a big leg kick, his right-handed swing can get long and his chase and swing-and-miss rates are high.

Bigger than his listed 196 pounds, Garcia has well-below-average speed and will have to watch his conditioning as he gets older. Nevertheless, he moves well behind the plate and has made strides with his receiving, framing and blocking since turning pro. He can become an average defender with solid arm strength if he continues to improve.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 35 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

The Red Sox signed Venezuelan outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia for $350,000 in 2019, then added his younger brother, Johanfran, for $850,000 three years later. He received the third-highest bonus in Boston's 2022 class and has emerged as the best prospect among that group. He made his U.S. debut in 2023 and slashed .302/.408/.497 in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League, ranking among the top 10 in all three categories, before spending the final month in Single-A at age 18.

Garcia is stronger than most teenagers and already displayed aptitude for driving the ball in the air. He lets his power come naturally, managing the strike zone while distributing balls to all fields. While his right-handed stroke can get long, he could hit for a decent average while providing 20 homers per season.

Garcia has well-below-average speed yet moves well behind the plate. He made significant improvements with his receiving, framing and blocking in 2023 and looks on course to becoming an average defender. He has solid-to-plus arm strength and threw out 38 percent of basestealers in his first two years as a pro.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 35 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

After signing Venezuelan outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia for $350,000 in 2019, the Red Sox landed his younger brother Johanfran for $850,000 three years later. That was the third-highest bonus in their 2022 international crop, behind seven-figure shortstops Fraymi DeLeon and Freili Encarnacion, and he has outperformed them both so far. An offensive-minded catcher, he's making his U.S. debut this summer and has been the best hitter on Boston's Rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate.

A right-handed hitter, Garcia is strong for a teenager and already shows the ability to drive balls in the air, giving him 20-homer potential. He shows some feel for hitting as well, using the entire field and displaying a reasonably disciplined approach. He has destroyed lefties and fared fine against righties early in his career.

Garcia has improved his receiving and blocking from his first pro season to his second and can become an average defender behind the plate. He has solid to plus arm strength and eradicated 45 percent of basestealers in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League during his pro debut. Though he's a well-below-average runner, he has decent instincts on the bases.

Garcia is built like Yadier Molina. He’s husky, strong and extremely durable. And while he could eventually develop into an all-around defender like Yadier, Garcia is better known for his bat over his defense at this stage of his career.

The teen simply has a great feel for hitting and performs well at the plate in games and showcases. He has displayed the ability to spray the ball all over the field with authority and has what has been described as “sneaky” pull power to his pull side.

He’s no slouch on defense. He has average hands and projects to have an average arm. He moves well behind the plate and continues to work on his blocking and receiving skills.

Garcia trains with Jonathan Valdez in Venezuela. The Red Sox are the favorite to sign him.
