Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 45 | Changeup: 55 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

“I am tomorrow, or some future day, what I establish today. I am today what I established yesterday or some previous day.” The other James Joyce could have very well been talking about pitching prospects, including the Mariners one who shares his name. This Joyce has always flown under the radar among a pitching-heavy pipeline, particularly given that he was a 16th-round pick in 2021, signed for just $25,000 and entered his pro career on the heels of struggling to find consistency at Hofstra University. Those challenges continued in his first full pro year at High-A Everett, but he took a notable leap forward in 2023 despite missing the season’s first two months with a forearm strain, climbing all the way to Double-A Arkansas.

Joyce operates with a three-pitch mix via a funky delivery. His fastball sits around 93 mph from a lower arm slot, and it's thrown with plenty of life. His 83-84 mph changeup runs and has hard fade to it and his 82-83 mph curveball gets big top to bottom action on it. That combination of funk and movement has allowed him to miss a fair amount of bats despite less than plus stuff.

The cause for Joyce’s turnaround last season? A big step forward with command. He dropped his walk rate from 10 to seven percent in the span of a year while keeping hitters in the ballpark, with just one homer surrendered in seven starts after the Double-A promotion. With many questions about his trajectory entering the year, he probably steered back into an arm with starter upside.

2023

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Curveball: 45 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

This James Joyce hails from New York and attended Hofstra University. After struggling to find consistency for two-plus years, Joyce threw well enough in his final year with The Pride and at the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League to get selected in Round 16 of the 2021 Draft, and he signed with the Mariners for $25,000. After an uneven first full season spent mostly with High-A Everett, Joyce took a nice step forward in 2023 despite missing the first two months of the season with a forearm strain, and he earned a promotion to Double-A in late July.

Joyce goes after hitters with a legitimate three-pitch mix, all coming from a funky delivery that helps his stuff play up.

While Joyce has never had a real problem with walks during his pro career, it's largely been control over command. That could ultimately hold him back and limit his ceiling, but he still has the chance to be a No. 5 type starter or swing man at the big league level.
