Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 45 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

Wisconsin is garnering a reputation for developing notable high school hitters over the past decade or so, and you can add Dix -- who hails from the same Whitefish Bay HS program that claims Craig Counsell as an alum -- to the growing list. Ahead of his senior year, the switch-hitting shortstop was slowed in summer showcases by a right shoulder injury and underwent labrum surgery that fall. He showed enough in his senior spring to go to the D-backs at the 35th overall pick and signed for $2.15 million. Only Jarred Kelenic ($4.5 million) and Gavin Lux ($2,314,500) have signed for more as Wisconsin high schoolers.

Dix shows a simple stroke from both sides of the plate, though he tends to look a little better from the left. He has been willing to spread the ball all around the field to pick up his hits, impressing scouts with his potential for an above-average hit tool. The shoulder issues brought some questions about Dix’s power, both before and after the Draft. There is projectable strength in his 6-foot-2 frame, and he could threaten for 15-20 homers by the time everything comes together.

The former Wake Forest commit played all four infield spots at the Area Code Games in an attempt to leave an impression on evaluators, and many believed he has the range and hands to stick at shortstop. He showed good arm strength before the injury, but that skill hadn’t come back in the spring. As a result, the D-backs have found him to be a better fit at second base in his first taste of the pros.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

Wisconsin is an underrated source of talent and produces a quality high school infielder seemingly every year. The latest is Dix, who comes from the same Whitefish Bay HS program that spawned Craig Counsell. Dix has a similar gamer mentality but better tools, though he was hampered on the showcase circuit last summer by a right shoulder injury that required labrum surgery in the fall. The D-backs selected him with the 35th overall pick in July and signed him for below slot at $2,150,000.

A switch-hitter, Dix employs a simple stroke and a disciplined, all-fields approach that allows him to make consistent contact from both sides of the plate. His shoulder slowed down his swing last summer, but when healthy, he has enough bat speed and projectable strength to provide 15-20 homers per season. His offensive game resembles that of D.J. LeMahieu, though Dix is a twitchier athlete.

While his defense was difficult to evaluate last summer because his shoulder injury reduced his solid arm strength to well-below-average, Dix has a good chance to stick at shortstop. He has solid speed and good hands, and he showed off his versatility by playing all four infield positions at the Area Code Games. The former Wake Forest recruit gained respect with his desire to test himself against quality competition despite not being at full health, and scouts praise his work ethic and leadership.
