Dalena shares an alma mater of Montoursville Area (Pa.) HS with Mike Mussina and was mentored by the Hall of Fame pitcher growing up in the Keystone State. After a stint at Monmouth in 2021-22, he played both ways at Division II Shippensburg in 2023, turned toward pitching in ’24 and posted a 3.36 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP with 99 strikeouts in 83 innings as a graduate student in ’25. The Padres took him in the sixth round, making him the first Shippensburg player selected since 2018 and the highest since 1999, and signed him for $10,000. Dalena made three brief appearances for Single-A Lake Elsinore in his pro debut.
The 6-foot-3 right-hander is entering his age-24 campaign in his first full season but has some upside given his limited background. He was sitting mid-90s with impressive ride up in the zone after signing, and it’s a pitch he uses to set up the rest of his repertoire. It’s likely to be a true north-south look with an upper-70s curveball that drops off the table and a low-80s slider that stands out more for its drop than sweep. The deuce has better action and got more whiffs in his final collegiate season, but finding a consistent preferred breaking pitch will be a priority in ’26.
Dalena also worked with a cutter and a changeup, the latter of which he struggled to command in his brief pro look in the California League. Dalena has a history of landing multiple pitches in the zone though, and he’d come up in offseason trade talks with other clubs intrigued by his early mix. He must prove his stuff can play beyond Division II, but the quality of the arsenal could make him a quality low-money, middle-round sign.
