Though scouts rate him as the second-best pure hitter in the North Texas prep class behind likely first-rounder Jett Williams, Thomas doesn't have nearly as a high profile. That may be because his commitment to Texas is so strong that he may not be signable, and also because he missed some time this spring with a right hand injury. He easily could develop into a top-three-rounds pick as a Draft-eligible sophomore in 2024.
Thomas has a sweet left-handed swing that stays in the hitting zone for a long time, and he consistently has competitive at-bats. Mature at the plate, he focuses on making hard contact from gap to gap rather than trying to do too much. With his hitting ability and bat speed, he should develop at least average power once he adds muscle to his 6-foot-2 frame.
Along with his promising bat, Thomas also offers plenty of athleticism. He's a plus runner with good instincts on the bases and at the outfield corners. The author of two no-hitters this spring as a left-handed pitcher, he has average arm strength and a chance to stick in right field.

Thomas exhibited some of the best bat-to-ball skills in the Texas high school ranks in 2022, but he missed time with a wrist injury and was unsignable from a Texas commitment, so he went undrafted. Two years later, he's one of the best pure hitters and top sophomore-eligible prospects in the 2024 Draft. He's adding to his value by showing he can play center field in addition to first base for the Longhorns.
Thomas has good feel for the barrel and doesn't try to do too much at the plate, letting his pretty left-handed swing work for him. He has traded some contact for power this spring, hitting the ball harder and showing that he should be able to provide 15-20 homers per season. He offers one of the higher floors among college bats and his ceiling continues to rise as he displays more pop.
To complement his hitting ability, Thomas offers several other promising tools. He's a solid runner and quicker once he gets going, though he's not much of a basestealer. He provides a plus glove at first base and also is a solid defender with arm strength to match in center field.

There’s an old adage that guys who know how to hit find their way into the lineup. Thomas, the Rockies’ second-round pick in 2024, looks like he might be just that type who hits his way to the big leagues after being one of the best pure hitters in his class as a Draft-eligible sophomore with the University of Texas. Exhibiting impressive bat-to-ball skills since back in his Texas high school days, Thomas slashed .349/.435/.635 with 16 homers in his final season with the Longhorns, then went 11-for-33 during his brief pro debut with Single-A Fresno for good measure.
Even in his short time with the Rockies, Thomas showed off what a good feel he has for his left-handed swing. He has the chance to really hit at the next level, routinely finding the barrel and not trying to do too much. There’s some sneaky pop in there, and as he showed during his sophomore year, he can sacrifice a little contact for pop without completely selling out for it.
Thomas is a pretty good athlete who runs better underway and has the ability to play multiple positions. He played more first than anywhere else with the Longhorns, but showed he could capably handle center field as a sophomore and the Rockies will likely work him at all three outfield spots during his first full year of pro ball. He’s already opened some eyes across the industry as the Rockies were getting calls about him from other teams.
