Back in 2009, Yucaipa High School had a right-handed corner infield bat type who ended up being taken as a supplemental first-rounder by the D-backs -- Matt Davidson -- who has gone on to play parts of five seasons in the big leagues, hitting 46 homers combined in 2017 and 2018 with the White Sox. Reimer fits a somewhat similar profile and has the chance to give Yucaipa it’s first hitter taken in the top few rounds since Davidson.

While Davidson had a reputation of being more power over hit, even back in high school, Reimer profiles as a potentially much more balanced bat. The 6-foot-3 infielder routinely finds the barrel and makes a lot of hard contact, using a slightly open stance and a small toe tap for timing, though he simplifies things more with two strikes. There’s legitimate power he can tap into, particularly from the pull side.

A solid athlete for his size, Reimer plays shortstop in high school, but will almost certainly move to third at the next level, where he does have a solid arm and the tools to play there long-term. But it’s the Washington recruit’s bat that teams will be buying, with the chance for him to become the first Yucaipa High product of any kind to go in the top three rounds since right-hander Taijuan Walker was a Mariners supplemental first-round pick in 2010.

A product of Yucaipa (Calif.) HS -- the same program that produced Mark Teahen, Matt Davidson and Taijuan Walker -- Reimer went to the Mets in the fourth round of the 2022 Draft and signed well above slot for $775,000. He began his first full season as a solid performer with Single-A St. Lucie and ranked third in the Florida State League (min. 250 PA) with a .412 OBP over 75 games, trailing only Top 100 prospects Jett Williams (.422) and Termarr Johnson (.419) in the category. Reimer finished with an .804 OPS on the circuit and was promoted to High-A Brooklyn in August but hit .203/.354/.278 at the higher level.

Standing 6-foot-2, Reimer bats from an open right-handed stance that enables him to see the ball well, and he makes correspondingly strong swing decisions. He’s selective at the right moments, doesn’t chase often (especially for his age) and posted one of the FSL’s highest in-zone contact rates at 91 percent. While he’s shown good raw power in the past, it didn’t quite show up in games in terms of homers (eight total), slugging percentage (.375) or exit velocity (107.6 mph max), though there’s still time for the 20-year-old.

A shortstop in high school, Reimer moved over to third base in pro ball because of his below-average speed, and he was inconsistent as he learned the nuances of the hot corner. He made 14 starts between St. Lucie and Brooklyn across the diamond at first, and there’s a chance he could see time at the outfield corners too. He’ll need the power to come through to be valuable at any of those spots. A pulled hamstring robbed Reimer of much of his chance to show off that pop in 2024.

Yucaipa HS (Calif.) has already produced notable Major Leaguers such as Mark Teahen, Matt Davidson and Taijuan Walker, and it could add another in Reimer. Ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 103 prospect in the 2022 Draft, the infielder went in the fourth round (119th overall) to the Mets and signed for well-above-slot at $775,000, a bonus closer to the slot of a pick in the high third round. Reimer showed promising early signs by going 6-for-23 (.261) with a homer, a triple and double the number of walks (six) as strikeouts (three) in a seven-game turn through the Florida Complex League.

At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, Reimer brings a physical presence to the plate, and he has shown the raw power to match that size in both batting practice and in-game situations. He typically bats from a slightly open stance and throws in a small toe tap to keep his timing down, but he also combines solid strike-zone judgment and a simplified approach to keep K's down. He could be a decent all-around offensive talent in time.

Reimer was a shortstop in high school, but virtually every evaluator knew that wasn’t going to stick because of his below-average speed. That’s already come to pass with the Mets, who moved him to third base immediately in the FCL, and while he has a solid arm and enough tools to play there, he’ll need to work on his defense to fulfill his average potential at the hot corner. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos may have already opened the Major League door, but much further down, Reimer is making sure the Mets stay well-stocked at third.
