A Michigander during his high school days, Steensma headed to Boone, North Carolina, home to Appalachian State, for college ball. After pitching out of the bullpen as the Mountaineers' closer, racking up seven saves as a freshman in 2023, he moved into the rotation as a sophomore, finishing among the Sun Belt Conference top 10 in a host of pitching categories. An elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery in December 2024 kept him off the mound in '25, but a combination of Mariners scouts and their analytics department saw enough potential from his performance the year prior to take him in the ninth round of last July's Draft. Now healthy, he got off to a very good start during his pro debut at Single-A in 2026.
A strong 6-foot-4 right-hander, Steensma has a potential four-pitch mix that gives him a chance to start. While his fastball sits 92-93 mph and touches 95, it plays up and misses bats thanks to riding life that comes as a result of the combination of good extension and low release height. His tight mid-80s slider has ticked up since his college days and could be an out pitch in time. He'll mix in an 80 mph curve, and while he does have a potentially serviceable changeup, he wasn't throwing it much at the outset of his pro career.
The Mariners are bullish about Steensma because he's still learning how to mix his pitches effectively. He was throwing a ton of strikes out of the gate, with the organization thinking he could have future plus command. They don't want to put unfair expectations on him, but the Mariners have done excellent development work with formerly injured college arms taken later on Day 2 of the Draft, like sixth-rounder-turned-All-Star Bryan Woo.
