Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

One of the more athletic players in Illinois' 2025 high school crop, Wheeler played third base and pitched for Morris (Ill.) HS, while also pulling duty as a wide receiver and defensive back in football and setting the school's career scoring record in basketball. His varied sporting interests didn't leave much time for the prep showcase circuit, so he flew a bit under the scouting radar. The Rangers waited until the sixth round to take him and paid an over-slot $525,000 to sign him away from an Illinois commitment.

Texas believes in Wheeler's offensive upside because he makes good swing decisions and consistent contact while producing better exit velocities than most players his age. He has a simple right-handed stroke and doesn't try to do too much at the plate. Once he adds more strength to his athletic 6-foot-5 frame and learns to elevate balls more regularly, he could produce 20 or more homers per year.

Wheeler presently has solid speed but may lose a step as he fills out. He moves well at third base and features a strong arm that ran fastballs up to 92 mph when he took the mound. If he can't stay on the dirt, his power and arm strength would profile well in right field.
