Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 65 | Cutter: 50 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Leach had two elbow surgeries in high school and a third to remove screws from the joint while in college, where he compiled a 5.50 ERA in 54 innings during two seasons at Creighton and one at Miami (Ohio). His medical history and lack of success left him unselected in the 2023 Draft, but his arm strength and feel for spinning the ball spurred the Astros to sign him for $125,000 as a nondrafted free agent. He missed most of last May and June with a shoulder strain but also added 4 mph to his fastball last year, which helped him shoot from High-A to Triple-A before he impressed in the Arizona Fall League.

Leach can exceed 3,000 rpm on a power curveball that operates in the low 80s, features huge downer break and can be unhittable when it's on. His heater went from sitting at 91-94 mph in 2024 to working at 95-97 and touching 99 with nice carry and some mild armside run. He also employs an upper-80s cutter that stands out more for its velocity than its action.

Pitching solely out of the stretch, Leach has a drop-and-drive delivery that provides a low release height and good extension. The depth of his curve can make it hard to harness and Triple-A hitters punished his fastball and cutter when he didn't locate it well. If he can improve his control, he could contribute to Houston's bullpen this season.
