The Rangers discovered right-hander Ronny Henriquez and promising hitters Randy Florentino and Hernandez at the same workout in the Dominican Republic and eventually signed the trio for a total of $45,000. Hernandez turned pro for $10,000 in December 2017 and led the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League in extra-base hits (32) while ranking second in homers (12), slugging (.635) and OPS (1.099) in his pro debut. He continued to rake when he came to the United States in 2019, leading the Rookie-level Arizona League in hits (66), extra-base hits (32), RBI (48) and total bases (124) while placing second in homers (11) and third in slugging (.646) and OPS (1.079).
Hernandez has a penchant for making consistent hard contact. A right-handed hitter, he has the chance to hit for average and power, and his pop to all fields stands out most right now. He's aggressive at the plate but doesn't swing and miss excessively and will accept walks when pitchers refuse to challenge him.
Where Hernandez will make his defensive home remains in question. He has solid arm strength and can flash similar speed, though he projects more as a below-average runner once he fills out. He's shaky behind the plate and has seen time at first base, but he'll probably wind up on an outfield corner.
