The son of a former St. Francis and European pro basketball forward with the same name, Lalane was born in the Bronx, moved to his father's native Dominican Republic as a youth and played the outfield before shifting to the mound at age 14. Signed for the largest bonus ($350,000) given to a pitcher in the Yankees' 2021 international class, he ranked as the best pitching prospect in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League during his U.S. debut in 2023 and starred in a Spring Breakout game the following March. But he worked just 31 2/3 innings with diminished stuff in the two seasons afterward because of shoulder issues that required surgery in the 2024-25 offseason.

Lalane's fastball ranged from 93-97 mph in his scoreless Spring Breakout inning but has sat at 91-92 since with more downhill plane than carry or armside run. He still does a nice job killing spin on a low-80s changeup with depth, though he can struggle to land it in the strike zone. His slider has devolved from a 78-82 sweeper to a mid-70s slurve.

The 6-foot-7 Lalane inherited size and athleticism from his dad, allowing him to create natural extension in his delivery. He pounds the strike zone to the tune of a 5 percent walk in the FCL, but that figure ballooned to 17 percent during the next two years. He once seemed on the track to developing three solid or better pitches with control to match, and now he's a total wild card.

He looked great in two shutout innings against the Blue Jays during Spring Breakout last March, but shoulder issues restricted him to just 12 1/3 frames during the regular season.

When healthy, Lalane demonstrates the potential for three plus pitches with possibly control to match. His fastball can sit at 93 mph and touch 97, though it could use more armside run and carry to keep it off barrels against more advanced hitters. He has advanced feel for a mid-80s changeup that fades and sinks, while he's still learning to harness a sweeping 78-82 mph slider.

The 6-foot-7 Lalane inherited size and athleticism from his father, and he does a fine job of keeping his long limbs in sync to repeat this delivery and pound the strike zone. His big frame offers some natural extension, and his low release height provides extra deception. While he has a huge ceiling, he also worked just 123 2/3 innings -- and just six above Rookie ball -- in his first four years as a pro and will be Rule 5 Draft-eligible after this season.

He already demonstrates advanced feel for a fading mid-80s changeup that's his more reliable secondary offering at this point. His 78-82 mph slider has a lot of lateral action, but he doesn't command it as well as his other two pitches.

He spent his first two pro seasons in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League before making his U.S. debut in 2023, when he was as impressive as any mound prospect in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League. He struck out 34 and walked just four in 21 2/3 innings.

Lalane has the potential for three plus pitches, beginning with a fastball that parks at 93-95 mph and touches 97 with running action and good carry up in the strike zone. He has advanced feel for a mid-80s changeup that fades at the plate. His change is more consistent than his slider, though the latter still misses bats and sits around 80 mph.

Despite being young and 6-foot-7, Lalane does a nice job of keeping his long limbs in sync and repeating his delivery to throw strikes. He shows the makings of solid command and features a low release point that belies his height and adds to his deception. While he'll need time to reach his ceiling, he has the upside of a mid-rotation starter.
