Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

The top position prospect in Tennessee's 2022 prep class, Godbout went undrafted because of his commitment to Virginia. An immediate starter for the Cavaliers, he became one of the best contact hitters in the college ranks, slashing .321/.415/.514 with an 11 percent strikeout rate in three college seasons. He posted similar numbers during a brief stint in High-A after signing for $1,093,800 as a supplemental second-rounder.

Godbout's bat-to-ball skills derive from a compact right-handed stroke, disciplined approach and exceptional hand-eye coordination. He made a lot of groundball contact while producing pedestrian exit velocities in college, but he immediately incorporated some changes after signing and drove the ball in the air more frequently. Boston's demonstrated ability to help players improve their strength, bat speed and ball flight could help Godbout produce at least 15 homers on an annual basis.

Godbout has fringy speed at best but compensates somewhat with a high baseball IQ. His average arm strength and range are best suited for second base, where he's a surehanded defender. The Red Sox gave him a little action at shortstop in his pro debut and plan on doing so again in 2026, though most scouts think that's a stretch.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Though Godbout was the best position prospect in the 2022 Tennessee high school class, he went undrafted because he was strongly committed to Virginia. He became an immediate starter for the Cavaliers and one of the best contact hitters in college baseball, maintaining an 11 percent strikeout rate while slashing .321/.415/.514 in three college seasons. The Red Sox selected him in the supplemental second round in July and signed him for $1,093,800.

Godbout employs a disciplined approach from the right side of the plate, getting selectively aggressive at times but rarely swinging and missing. He tends to make a lot of line drive contact from gap to gap and doesn't worry about swinging for the fences. He doesn't hit the ball especially hard or launch a lot of balls in the air, which may limit him to no more than fringy power, though Boston has developed more pop in several players by helping them increase their strength and bat speed.

Godbout appeared to add some muscle before his junior season, though he also looked a little stiffer and slower than he had in the past. Although he has fringy speed at best, he makes the most of it thanks to his high baseball IQ. His average arm strength limits him to the right side of the infield, and he plays a competent second base.

The University of Virginia has consistently produced solid hitters who end up in the big leagues, most recently Jake McCarthy and Zack Gelof, and in 2024, Griff O’Ferrall and Ethan Anderson went in the top two rounds. The 2025 class has another pair of Cavaliers who could go in the same range in Henry Ford and Godbout, an infielder coming off a sophomore season that saw him finish with an OPS of 1.117 and earn second-team All-American honors from Baseball America.

In many ways, Godbout is the prototypical Virginia hitter, a solid all-around baseball player with tools that play up thanks to a high baseball IQ. He makes consistent hard contact from the right side of the plate and doesn’t chase or swing-and-miss much (14 percent miss rate in 2024). He could end up with better than average power when all is said and done, with most of it coming right now to his pull side. Godbout appeared to have added some strength this fall, but looked a little stiffer as a result. He’s a fringy runner and that might be trending in the wrong direction with that added bulk.

There was some hope Godbout would get time at shortstop this coming season; not that he’d be able to play there long-term but so scouts could see how athletic he could be, and he did play a few games at the premium position during his brief Cape Cod League stint. But he’s played second base almost exclusively and that added physicality has hampered his range at the keystone, making it unclear where he might profile best defensively long term.
