Scouting Report

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 55 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Two former Rangers pitchers helped shape Figuereo: his father, Victor, who made it to short-season ball in the early 2000s, and Edison Volquez, an All-Star and the key player in the trade that brought Josh Hamilton to Texas, who trained him in the Dominican Republic. Signed for $80,000 in 2021, Figuereo worked with Volquez after a decent pro debut and added significant strength. He ranked second in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with nine homers in 35 games in 2022 but scuffled in Single-A last year.

Figuereo's left-handed stroke and hitting ability initially attracted the Rangers, and he still shows good feel for the barrel at times. But he also chases too many pitches and gets too focused on trying to launch balls to his pull side, resulting in a 29 percent strikeout rate at Single-A. His combination of bat speed and strength -- he weighs much more than his listed 165 pounds -- creates plus raw power but he's going to need to make adjustments to solve quality pitching.

Figuereo has below-average speed and limited range at third base, where he committed 23 errors in 104 games a year ago. He has plus arm strength but also some issues with throwing accuracy that he made some progress with over the course of last season. He'll need to watch his thick lower half in order to remain at the hot corner, and he might move to an outfield corner anyway.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Figuereo has connections to two ex-Rangers pitchers -- his father, Victor, topped out in short-season ball in the early 2000s and former All-Star Edinson Volquez (who was traded to bring Josh Hamilton to Texas) trained him and helped him transform his body after his decent 2021 pro debut. Signed for $80,000 out of the Dominican Republic that year, Gleider was significantly stronger last summer. He ranked second in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League with nine homers in just 35 games before a late promotion to Single-A.

The Rangers liked Figuereo's left-handed swing and bat-to-ball skills when they signed him, and he immediately demonstrated the aptitude to pull and drive balls in the air. Now that he has added muscle and weighs significantly more than his listed 165 pounds, he's displaying plus raw power and 25-homer potential. He hits the ball hard but may need to tone down his approach against more advanced pitchers because he focuses so much on launching balls to his pull side.

Figuereo spent his first two pro seasons at third base but may not stay there. He has fringy speed and range and his plus arm strength is mitigated by accuracy issues that resulted in 28 errors in 77 games. The Rangers could decide to expedite his bat by lessening his defensive responsibilities with a move to an outfield corner.

2022

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

Right-hander Victor Figuereo topped out in short-season ball with the Rangers in the early 2000s, but his son looks destined for bigger and better things in Texas. Signed for $80,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2021, Gleider transformed his body after a decent pro debut. Still just 18, he has wowed scouts as one of the top sluggers in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League this summer.

The Rangers liked Figuereo's sweet left-handed stroke and bat-to-ball skills when they signed him. He displayed the aptitude to drive balls in the air as soon as he arrived in pro ball, and now that he has added significant strength to go with his bat speed, he's crushing balls. He shows some feel for the strike zone, and while he may need to moderate his aggressive approach against more advanced pitchers, he has the upside of a .275 hitter with 25 homers per season.

It's unclear whether Figurero will remain at third base. He has fringy speed, decent range and plus am strength but needs to improve his consistency and throwing accuracy at the hot corner. Second base, left field and first base are other potential options, and his bat may profile well at all of them.
