Fien was a showcase standout heading into his senior year of high school as the 2024 MLB High School All-American Game MVP and a Team USA star. He didn’t quite hold that same offensive consistency as a senior at Great Oak HS in California, but his stock didn’t tumble completely. The Rangers selected him 12th overall in July and signed him for below slot at $4.8 million. After getting his feet wet at Single-A to round out 2025, Fien was traded to the Nationals in the offseason as the best prospect in the return for left-handed starter MacKenzie Gore.
Starting from a slightly closed off stance, Fien begins his work in the box with hands held higher than most batters, and that unorthodoxy brings some pause in how it will translate to the pro side. He has done plenty of damage with it in the past by showing an ability to lift the ball consistently, and with a 6-foot-3 frame already, he could pack on enough muscle to get to plus power down the line. In his brief foray in the Minors, he did swing over a lot of sliders and changeups, and he’ll need to find the barrel more often to get the most of his pop.
Fien got quicker over his high school career and could be an average runner, though there’s the possibility he slows down a tad as he matures. He has a plus arm that should work from the left side of the infield, but where exactly will deserve watching. He’s now in the same organization as No. 1 overall pick Eli Willits, a potential plus shortstop. The Nats plan to rotate Fien, who underwent offseason surgery to address a bone spur in his right hand, between short, third base and even second while hoping his bat does much of the talking in Year 1.

After Fien starred on the showcase circuit last summer, winning MVP honors at MLB's High School All-American Game and leading the U.S. 18-and-under national team in slugging (.680), many evaluators considered him the best bat in the 2025 high school class. While he wasn't as consistent as a California high school senior, his offensive upside still landed him a $4.8 million bonus as the 12th overall pick by the Rangers. His older brother Dylan is a catcher in the Athletics system. Fien headed to the Nationals as the headlining prospect return in the MacKenzie Gore trade in January.
Though Fien has an unorthodox setup in which he holds his hands higher than most hitters, that doesn't prevent him from doing damage. He has a patient approach and a quick right-handed stroke that allowed him to repeatedly barrel up top competition as an amateur. He's continuing to add muscle to his 6-foot-3 frame and has shown the aptitude to drive the ball in the air, allowing him to get to much of his plus raw power.
Fien also has gotten quicker as he has gotten stronger, though he still won't be more than an average runner and could lose a step as he fills out more. Though he was drafted as a shortstop, he profiles better as a third baseman and could be a solid defender at the hot corner. He played first base for Team USA and his strong arm would fit in right field.

In 2024, Dylan Fien was a switch-hitting catcher from Great Oak High School (Temecula, Calif.) who got an over-slot deal in the seventh round from the A's. Now it's his younger brother's turn, and Gavin has the chance to go a lot earlier than his sibling, especially after a summer showcase circuit where many evaluators thought he was the best prep hitter in the class. Fien hit everywhere he went, winning MLB Develops MVP honors at Major League Baseball's High School All-American Game with a pair of hits and RBIs and batting .400 for Team USA in the 18U World Cup qualifier in Panama, though a less productive spring has made some evaluators pause.
Fien is a 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter with plenty of bat speed who produced consistent line drives against top competition all summer. While he has an unorthodox setup with high hands, he made it work and was always on time, but this spring he had more trouble finding his rhythm and was often late in pulling the trigger at the dish. He's added strength, and there could be more power to come as he advances.
Fien's added physicality has allowed him to run better, though that's never going to be a part of his game. Committed to Texas, he has the chance to profile well at third base with plenty of arm. He could end up at first or in a corner outfield spot in the future, though there are teams that saw enough over the summer to potentially draft his bat in the first round.
