Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Conticello got a $500,000 bonus to sign out of Stoneman Douglas HS in Florida as an eighth-round pick in 2021, setting aside a South Florida commitment to do so. He’s essentially climbed one level per season from the Arizona Complex League in 2022 to Double-A Amarillo, where he spent all of his age-22 campaign in '25. He hit .275/.369/.435 with 12 homers in 121 games with the Sod Poodles, good for a 110 wRC+ while only getting 30 plate appearances against pitchers younger than him.

The lefty batter, who has a long finish in his hacks a little similar to Cody Bellinger, still has above-average raw power and a good chance to get to it at full maturity, even if he didn’t post the big-time slugging others do in hitter-friendly Amarillo. Part of that is because of his approach. He expands the zone a lot against lefty sliders and righty changeups, essentially the pitches running away from him, but he doesn’t whiff as much as might be expected because of it. (His 21.3 percent K rate was actually pretty sensible for a power-first bat.) Being more selective than a 56 percent swing rate would help his strengths shine.

An average runner with good arm strength, Conticello began his career as a third baseman, began to split time at both corner infield spots in 2023 and then moved to the outfield full-time in '24. He’s made some starts in center but fits better in right field, and the D-backs are comfortable enough in his progress there that he won’t have to move back down the defensive spectrum to first base. He’ll still have to slug in a corner though, and he’s added good weight ahead of his age-23 season to help his cause all the more.

A product of Stoneman Douglas HS in Florida, Conticello signed for well above slot with a $500,000 bonus as an eighth-round pick in 2021. He hit 17 homers between Single-A and High-A two years ago but put in a more well-rounded breakout campaign in 2024, hitting .282/.346/.428 with nine homers and 20 steals in 126 games for Hillsboro. He rounded out his age-21 season with six games for Double-A Amarillo, adding one extra dinger.

The left-handed slugger cuts a lean figure in the box at 6-feet-3 and already shows raw power with good bat speed. Some believe he’s still growing into his strength and could continue to fill out as he gets deeper into his 20s. Moving back to the hitters' haven that is Amarillo for 2025 could find Conticello putting up career bests in most slugging categories. His overall contact rate was solid for his age despite a lengthy swing, but he struggled against lefties. None of his homers came against same-side pitching and he slugged just .302 against it.

Conticello may just be an average runner, but he’s a lively one who knows when to pick his stealing spots. He began his career playing the two corner infield spots but moved to right field primarily in ’24. His reads and routes remain in transition there, but his plus arm strength and accuracy absolutely fit the position as he recorded 14 outfield assists last season. The former South Florida commit headed to the upper Minors for the first time in 2025, but his issues against lefties have continued.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 50 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 40

Ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 244 prospect in the 2021 Draft class out of Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, Conticello fell to the D-backs in the eighth round that summer but signed for well above slot at $500,000. The former South Florida commit has been on a bit of a slow road since signing, as can happen for a prep pick, but he reached High-A Hillsboro as a 20-year-old in 2023. He slashed .221/.311/.417 with a career-high 17 homers in 110 games between there and Single-A Visalia, and he returned to the Northwest League with a strong showing early this spring.

Measuring in at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, Conticello makes for a tall, if lean, figure in the box. He has impressive raw power from the left side -- his underlying metrics were even better than his surface slugging in ’23 -- and he has the lift and bat speed needed to get that pop to play in games. While the swing looks loose, there is some length to it -- think early 2020s Cody Bellinger -- and that could make strikeouts a concern, especially on stuff up in the zone. Conticello has also shown rougher righty-lefty splits that will need ironing out the higher he climbs and the more dominant southpaws he sees.

An average runner for now, Conticello can push for double-digit steals yearly. He had some experience at shortstop in school but split time between both corner infield spots in the early years of his career. In 2024, the D-backs have moved him to right field, where his arm strength certainly fits, but it’s clear his routes need tightening with experience. At least his developmental arrow continues to point up, giving Arizona the desire to find him a permanent defensive spot.

A year ago, Coby Mayo was a fourth-round draft pick of the Orioles, a third baseman out of Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Now it’s his friend Conticello’s turn, another powerful prep infielder who transferred to Stoneman Douglas for his senior season. While Conticello isn’t expected to go as high as Mayo did after struggling a bit this spring, he does possess some similar offensive qualities.

At 6-foot-4, the left-handed-hitting Conticello is lean and athletic and like Mayo, has some serious raw power to tap into. It’s pop that has shown up occasionally now when he’s been on time, but there’s more work to do with a swing that has a lot of rotation to it. He can generate bat speed and loft, but also can open up too soon. A solid athlete, Conticello runs well underway, though speed isn’t likely to be a part of his game as he matures.

A shortstop in high school, no one believes Conticello will stick at the premium position at the next level. Some feel he can handle a move to third, with an arm that works from the left side of the infield, while others feel his footwork will necessitate a move to a corner outfield spot. Wherever he plays, it’s the power potential in the bat that will have teams trying to keep him from heading to the University of South Florida in the fall.
