Only three players have ever been drafted out of Cary-Grove HS in Illinois, and just two have ever signed. Both enter the 2026 season as Brewers: Major Leaguer Quinn Priester (2019) and Dorchies. The latter was much less heralded coming out of the prep ranks than his predecessor and went in the 10th round of the 2024 Draft before signing away from a University of Illinois-Chicago commitment with a $162,500 bonus. Only 17 on Draft Day, Dorchies came flying out of the gate in his first full season, blowing past the Arizona Complex League and reaching Single-A Carolina by mid-June. He finished with a 2.74 ERA, a 1.05 WHIP and 89 strikeouts over 82 innings between both spots.
Dorchies checks in at 6-feet-5 and uses that size to generate around 7 feet of extension, putting his five-pitch mix right on top of hitters. His four-seamer and sinker only sit in the 90-93 mph range right now, but the ride on the former and the run on the latter help them play beyond the velo. Still only 19 for all of his second full season, Dorchies could stand to add strength and get that heat closer to the mid-90s with regularity in time. His low-80s, low-spin splitter dives late to generate whiffs at his best rates, but he’s been more focused on throwing a low-80s sweeping slider as his most-used secondary. An upper-80s cutter serves as a bridge pitch.
The teenager’s walk rate inflated about four ticks once he got away from the complex, but he doesn’t overthrow and should deliver a decent amount of strikes, especially if that strength comes around. Dorchies already displays desirable traits and promising future projection for a 10th-round pick and could become one of Milwaukee’s better development stories by the time he reaches The Show.

Only two drafted players have ever signed out of Illinois’ Cary-Grove High School ... and they both currently pitch in the Brewers' organization. Quinn Priester was the first when he went to the Pirates with the 18th overall pick in 2019. Five years later, Milwaukee selected Dorchies (then only 17 years old) in the 10th round and signed him for $162,500 to forego a commitment to the University of Illinois-Chicago. The right-hander zoomed out of the Arizona Complex League this summer with a 1.67 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 32 strikeouts in 27 innings and posted similar results with Single-A Carolina after a mid-June promotion.
Standing 6-foot-5, Dorchies uses every bit of his height to generate nearly seven feet of extension and get both his four-seamer and sinker right on top batters. He typically only sits around 90-93 mph (touching 95), but his proximity to batters, combined with good ride on the four-seamer and run on the sinker, helps the heaters play up. A low-80s sweeping slider gives him a gloveside option, and he can play off that with a tighter upper-80s cutter. His low-80s splitter might be his best pitch now, displaying impressive dive and separation off the fastballs. Single-A batters have chased the pitch a ton early, thrown off by the low spin and deception out of a low three-quarters slot.
Because Dorchies isn’t overthrowing, his command has been impressive for such a young arm, and his arsenal -- though lacking a true plus pitch right now -- is diverse enough that he’s dominated batters from both sides. It’s easy to dream on what he can become if he adds more velocity in his 20s, though he also needs to expand his workload too. Early signs indicate that Dorchies is a good 10th-round find and early development win for the Crew.
