Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

Part of a Panamanian pipeline to Georgia Premier Academy (Statesboro, Ga.) highlighted by Guardians 2019 first-rounder Daniel Espino, Rodriguez was one of the older prep prospects (19 years, seven months) in the 2023 Draft. The Cubs didn't mind his age because they had some third-round grades on him, and they took him in the 13th round. His development has progressed more slowly than expected, but he finally reached Double-A at the end of last season.

Rodriguez operates at 92-95 mph and touches 99 with his fastball, but he's often tentative with it because it lacks good shape and gets whacked when it grabs too much of the plate. He shows much better feel for strikes with his upper-80s changeup that fades and sinks. Like the rest of his arsenal, his tight mid-80s slider plays as an average pitch.

Rodriguez works solely out of the stretch with a low release height that creates some deception. He has improved his strike-throwing every season as a pro, though his control and command still need more work if he's going to succeed as a starter. He gets more ground balls than he misses bats and is more likely to wind up in the bullpen.
