New York spent most of its 2022 international pool on a $4 million bonus for shortstop Roderick Arias, with the second-highest amount ($275,000) going to Urena, a fellow Dominican. A broken hand limited him to just 11 games in his pro debut that summer before he missed all of 2023 following left knee surgery. Healthy again this year, he ranked third in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League in slugging (.564), OPS (.984) and homers (eight).
Urena homered in his first pro at-bat and stands out most with his impressive raw power. A right-handed hitter, he has a pull-happy approach designed to launch balls in the air to left field. Though he's aggressive, he also displayed some patience at the plate in the FCL.
An outfielder for much of his amateur career, Urena is more athletic than most catchers but also raw behind the plate. Missing most of his first two pro summers cost him time to polish his receiving and blocking skills, which remain works in progress. He has solid arm strength but needs to refine his release and accuracy.
