Duran was traded to the Blue Jays in August 2022 as a player to be named later in an earlier swap involving relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop, and then top prospect Jordan Groshans. Looking back, it was an awfully savvy move to acquire a prospect who has developed into the top catcher in the system. The backstop spent parts of the 2023, '24 and '25 seasons with Single-A Dunedin before finally earning a promotion to High-A Vancouver last summer, where he hit a combined .275 with eight home runs and a .767 OPS over 100 games. 

Duran lost some steam in Vancouver, so the dip in his numbers could be more about fatigue than talent, but that’s something young catchers need to adjust to. Duran earns very high marks among teammates, coaches and development staff for his leadership and clubhouse presence. He speaks both English and Spanish and has worked on his ability to manage a pitching staff -- which is so often the final piece to the puzzle -- and his defense behind the plate profiles him as a future big leaguer. 

While Duran’s average exit velocity has crept up, it’s likelier that his power lands in the range of 10-15 home runs, with the majority of his value coming from an on-base ability and his presence behind the plate. A step forward at the plate could still change this, but Duran likely profiles as an MLB backup, which is still a valuable asset for a club.

Duran signed with the Marlins for $450,000 in January 2021 but lasted only two seasons (both spent in the Dominican Summer League) before being traded to the Blue Jays in August 2022 as a player to be named later in an earlier swap involving relievers Anthony Bass and Zach Pop and then top prospect Jordan Groshans. The backstop spent parts of the 2023, 2024 and 2025 seasons with Single-A Dunedin before finally earning a promotion to High-A Vancouver this summer after hitting .296/.378/.439 with five homers and a 133 wRC+ in 66 games.

Despite the improved offensive numbers, Duran still earns his best marks for his defensive work. A better runner out of the box than many catchers, he translates that into his athleticism behind the plate, and after transitioning to a one-knee-down setup this season, his receiving has become a major strength. He’s also cut down significantly on his passed balls. Duran can throw darts to second base, blending arm strength with quick reactions, but he needs to get the ball on the bag more for his caught-stealing rate to match his tools.

Duran, who looks relaxed in a straightened stance before employing a leg kick, added some pop to his profile with his average exit velocity jumping from 84.7 mph in the Florida State League in 2024 to 87.5 at the same level in ’25. His hard-hit rate also took a nice boost, but his expected numbers were still well below his traditional stats in Dunedin before the promotion. Duran is most likely to have an OBP-driven profile on the offensive side while his defensive work fuels his climb.
