Scouting Report

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 45

The Yankees usually prefer offensive-minded catchers, but Perez stands out most for his ability behind the plate. Signed for just $50,000 out of Venezuela in 2023, he was arguably that system's best defensive backstop before making his full-season debut. He came to the United States last summer and placed second in walks (45) and third in on-base percentage (.444) in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League. A move to full-season ball in 2025 has been a challenge, but he’ll get the chance to hit the reset button with the Pirates, who acquired him as part of the prospect package in return for David Bednar at the Trade Deadline.

Taller and significantly stronger than his listed 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds, Perez has the upside of plus receiving and blocking skills. His arm strength already is at that level, and he boosts it with a quick release that helps him shut down the running game. More athletic than most catchers, he's agile behind the plate and shows below-average speed on the bases.

Though his defensive prowess stands out the most, Perez has offensive potential as well. A right-handed hitter who's more disciplined than most teenagers, he has the strength to provide 15 homers annually once he learns to launch balls in the air to his pull side more often. His approach can border between patient and passive, but he makes his share of hard-hit contact.

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

While most Yankees catching prospects stand out more for their offense than their defense, Perez bucks that trend. Signed for $50,000 out of Venezuela in 2023, he has already emerged as one of the best backstops in the system, while holding his own with the bat during two years of Rookie ball. He ranked second in walks (45) and third in on-base percentage (.444) in the Florida Complex League during his U.S. debut this summer.

Perez moves well behind the plate and shows the potential to develop plus receiving and blocking skills. He has the arm strength to match and a quick release that helps erase basestealers. He's more athletic than a typical catcher and has below-average speed.

A right-handed hitter, Perez employs an approach that straddles the border between patient and passive. He does a nice job of making contact and using the entire field, but he needs to add more strength. He could hit 12-15 homers per season if he learns to pull and launch balls more frequently as he gains experience.
