One of Cuba's top hitters at the 2018 15-and-under World Cup, Quero left the island a year later and signed with the Angels for $200,000 in February 2021. He won Single-A California League MVP honors in 2022, slashing .312/.435/.530 at age 19, before skipping a level to Double-A last season. While he posted less gaudy statistics as the third-youngest regular in the Southern League, the White Sox acquired him to be their catcher of the future as part of the Lucas Giolito/Reynaldo López trade in late July.
A switch-hitter, Quero did much more damage from the right side in 2023 after offering more production as a lefty the year before. He controls the strike zone, makes consistent contact and uses the opposite field well from both sides of the plate, and that didn't change even when his numbers dipped last season. He struggled to launch balls in the air in 2023 but is driving them with more authority this year, creating optimism that he can get to 20-homer power.
Quero has a thick 5-foot-11, 210-pound build, lacks quickness and looked slower on the bases and behind the plate in 2023 than he did previously. An offensive-minded catcher, he's working to improve his receiving, framing and blocking, but he may not be more than a fringy defender. He features average arm strength and erased 24 percent of basestealers last season.

A regular on Cuban youth teams, Quero left the island in 2019 and signed with the Angels for $200,000 in February 2021. After a promising pro debut, he won MVP honors in the Single-A California League in 2022, batting .313/.435/.530 as a 19-year-old. He jumped to Double-A this season and was the third-youngest regular in the Southern League when the White Sox acquired him and left-hander Ky Bush in exchange for Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López in late July.
A switch-hitter with more power from the left side of the plate, Quero barrels up the ball consistently from both sides. He has an advanced approach with excellent plate discipline, drawing a ton of walks in the early stages of his pro career. He has the chance to be at least an above-average hitter when all is said and done, and his ability to tap into his raw pop took a nice step forward in 2022, with more over-the-fence ability to come as he continues to figure out when to attack pitches in the zone.
Quero moves well behind the plate and has a solid arm. There's still work to be done on other facets of his defensive game, from his receiving to his game-calling, though he's still just 20 and has plenty of time to arrive. The White Sox acquired him with hopes that he'll be their starting catcher of the future.

Quero initially made a name for himself in international competition with Cuba, starring on the national team in the U-15 World Cup in 2018. Part of a signing class by the Angels that was led by Denzer Guzman and his seven-figure bonus, Quero got $200,000 to sign in February 2021 and made his pro debut in the United States, playing his way from the Arizona Complex League up to Low-A. He continued raising his profile with a strong full season with Single-A Inland Empire in 2022.
A switch-hitting catcher, Quero has a good feel for the barrel with the ability to make a lot of contact. He already shows he can consistently have professional at-bats and isn’t afraid to walk. He’s more contact-oriented now, but he’s started to tap into some extra-base pop, with most of it showing up on the left side so far.
Quero has a solid arm and threw out 37 percent of potential basestealers in his debut. He needs to continue to work on his receiving and managing of a game, but all of the tools are there for him to be a decent defender behind the dish. He’s not flashy, but he’s rapidly becoming one of the better catching prospects in the Minors, one who has the chance to be a solid big league regular if it all clicks.

As an amateur in Cuba, Quero starred on the international stage, hitting .400 in the U-15 World Cup held in Panama in 2018. With the delay in the start of the 2020-21 international starting period, Quero didn’t sign with the Angels until February 2021, with his $200,000 deal one of 11 bonuses of six figures or more the organization handed out in the period. Quero turned 18 in April and made his pro debut in the United States, in the Arizona Complex League.
Quero has the chance to be a very solid all-around catcher. He’s a switch-hitter with a very advanced approach at the plate, especially given his age. While there is some swing-and-miss to his game, he rarely chases pitches out of the zone and walks nearly as often as he strikes out. He was posting 88-mph average exit velocities at the outset of his career, showing he can impact the ball, and some power was evident early.
Defensively, Quero gets high marks for his ability to receive well and already has aptitude for calling a game and working with pitchers. He has a solid average arm as well. The Angels don’t have a ton of catching in their system, with Quero already establishing himself as the best backstop in the organization.
