Montero is a strong, switch-hitting infielder with one of the smoothest swings in the class. He has plus bat speed from each side of the plate and is not shy about using the entire field to compile hits.
Using a fluid, compact swing, Montero routinely barrels pitches up, hitting the ball with authority to all fields. On the other side of the diamond, he is a solid defensive shortstop. Scouts have applauded Montero's awareness in the field, as well as his technically sound defensive actions. His arm strength is above average, and the Dominican infielder projects to stick at shortstop.
Scouts have also applauded Montero’s overall makeup and durability. He trains in the Dominican Republic with Javier Rodriguez, a member of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program.

Montero was one of three players to receive seven-figure bonuses from the A’s during the 2024 international signing period, with his $1.2 million bonus tying for the largest of the period for the organization with Jose Ramos. Learning from what they perceived as mistakes in years past when they moved high-money international prospects to the United States perhaps too quickly, the A’s gave Montero a second year in the Dominican Summer League after an underwhelming performance there in ‘24. The second time around in the DSL brought him much more success, as he slashed .313/.484/.580 with nine homers in 55 games last summer.
Montero returned for his second year in much better shape and with an overall better understanding of his approach at the plate. The switch-hitting shortstop can impact the ball from both sides, showing he can hit for average and power. From the right side, he is more direct to the ball; from the left side, his swing is a lot more picturesque as he naturally has had more at-bats from that side. His solid approach has led to a good ability to draw walks and keep his strikeout totals relatively low.
The A’s were very pleased with what Montero showed last year. Defensively, his instincts should help him stick at shortstop, especially with his improved conditioning, though he is obviously still growing into his 6-foot-2 frame as a teenager, which could eventually lead to a move to third. The next step for him is to make his debut in the United States and begin his climb up the organizational ladder.

The A’s handed out three seven-figure bonuses during the 2024 international signing period, with Montero’s $1.2 million tying for the largest of the period for the organization with Jose Ramos and a shade ahead of Wei-En Lin ($1.13 million). Montero's debut in the Dominican Summer League that summer was nothing to write home about (.239/.398/.375) and the A’s are trying to let their prospects have some success before moving them along, so he’s repeated the level in 2025. It seems like a good move as the infielder put up very impressive numbers in his second DSL stint.
A switch-hitting shortstop, Montero has shown the ability to impact the ball from both sides of the plate, with his natural right-handed swing more direct to the ball, though his left-handed swing is more picturesque and he obviously gets more plate appearances from that side. He has the chance to hit for average and power, with a solid approach that has allowed him to walk more than he strikes out for much of the summer.
Last year, Montero was slower and less athletic, but attention to conditioning and nutrition has helped him get leaner and stronger. An average runner, Montero has the instincts and actions to stick at shortstop for a long time, with a solid and accurate arm. If his body gets bigger as he matures -- he played all of 2025 at age 18 -- he could move to the hot corner, but the A’s don’t see that in his future. What they are hoping for is that he comes to instructs this year and stays in the United States as one of the better prospects to come out of their Dominican academy in some time.
