There was a dearth of college catching in the 2025 Draft class, and Carmichael stood out as one of the few who landed in the top 100 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 250 Draft prospects. Following his father, Darby, and brother, Braden, by playing his college ball at Oklahoma, Carmichael used his Cape Cod League All-Star turn (where he won game MVP honors) as a springboard into an outstanding junior season, when he posted an OPS north of 1.000 and showed off improved defensive chops behind the dish. The Pirates nabbed him in the third round and pushed him to High-A Greensboro for his pro debut, where a little wrist issue sapped his production.
A right-handed hitter with the possibility of average tools across the board, Carmichael has a disciplined approach, making consistent contact and showing an ability to use the middle of the field. Most of his power -- he hit 17 homers for the Sooners last year -- comes to his pull side, and he has the strength to get to 20 homers annually if he can find a bit more loft.
Carmichael is a solid athlete who runs better than most catchers and can steal a base now and again. The Pirates loved the leadership traits he showed right out of the gate, always a plus for the position, and his improved arm strength has already been apparent. There’s work to be done on his receiving in terms of his timing and glove positioning, but the pieces are all there to be a decent all-around big league backstop.

Carmichael was the third member of his family to play at Oklahoma, following his father, Darby, and brother Braden. Easton caught his sibling at times during his freshman season in 2023, spent much of last year as a DH and reasserted himself behind the plate this spring. One of the better options in a thin Draft class of catchers, he earned All-Star Game MVP honors in the Cape Cod League last summer and helped himself by improving defensively as a junior, a big reason why the Pirates took him in the third round of the Draft.
Carmichael doesn't stand out in any particular area but has the potential for average tools across the board. A right-handed hitter, he has a disciplined approach and makes consistent contact while focusing on using the middle of the field. His pull power could translate into 15-20 homers per season if he learns to drive the ball in the air more regularly.
Faster than most catchers, Carmichael can flash solid run times from home to first and will steal an occasional base. He moves well behind the plate and upgraded his receiving this year while handling a talented Sooners pitching staff. He also has increased his arm strength, though he still struggles to combat the running game.
