Cease had one of the best fastball/curveball combinations in the 2014 Draft and might have been a first-rounder as a Georgia high schooler if he hadn't injured his elbow that March. The Cubs still paid him $1.5 million as a sixth-rounder despite his pending Tommy John surgery, then brought him back slowly before including him in the Jose Quintana trade with the White Sox in July 2017. He took off in 2018, winning MLB Pipeline Pitcher of the Year honors after excelling in Double-A and placing fifth in the Minors in opponent average (.189) and eighth in strikeout rate (11.6 per nine innings).
Cease continues to dominate with his fastball and curveball. His quick arm generates 95-98 mph heaters that regularly creep into triple-digit territory with some sinking and running life. His curve has tremendous depth and some power as well, qualifying as a true hammer when it's on.
The rest of Cease's repertoire consists of a mid-80s slider/cutter that he started using more often in 2018, and a changeup that can become an average offering once it gets more consistent. He has streamlined his delivery since turning pro and is doing a better job of repeating it, as evidenced by the fact that his walk rate has improved each year. Control may never be his forte but he's providing enough strikes to project as a starter who can make an impact.

How this works: Every pitch is affected by the forces of gravity, which means that every pitch drops on its way from the mound to the plate. These numbers are reported with gravity, which makes them larger and different than other pitch movement numbers you may have seen. Since gravity requires time, and slower pitches aren’t ‘better’ just because they have more time to move, the movement of a pitch is compared to ‘average’ movement by comparing it to other MLB pitch types within +/- 2 MPH and from within +/- 0.5 feet of extension and release.
