Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 55 | Curveball: 50 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 40

After a rough sophomore year in which he posted a 7.64 ERA and allowed 22 home runs in 17 starts for NC State, Fritton rebounded to become the first pitcher in school history to strike out at least 100 batters (107 in his case) in a season since Carlos Rodón in 2014. He was the first pitcher off the board for the Rays in the 2025 Draft when the club took him in the fourth round, and he signed for below slot at $497,500. He’s impressed early on with Single-A Charleston in his first full season, and as of early August, he led the organization in punchouts.

The 6-foot-1 southpaw may not cut an imposing figure on the mound, but he does get above-average extension and generates a low release point to help fuel his most impressive outings. That combination helps his 92-95 mph fastball play up, and the Rays believed it to be his best pitch coming out of school. (As such, he throws it more than 50 percent of the time in pro ball so far.) His 85-88 mph changeup acts like a potential above-average pitch at present with good armside action, and it’s used almost exclusively against righties. He has an 86-88 mph slider to run away from lefties with, and a 78-81 mph curveball gets promising spin, though it’s the least likely pitch in his arsenal to find the zone.

Fritton’s walk rate pretty much held over from his time in the ACC, settling in around 10-11 percent. That’s fine enough to start from now, but he’s also a collegiate pitcher from a big program who (as of early August) has yet to see High-A yet. There is a deep enough arsenal and movement profile here to make him an interesting starter for now, but bigger challenges await.
