Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

A product of the Hawaiian baseball scene, Saltiban was one of the few high school players to compete in the 2023 MLB Draft League. He showed enough for the Phillies to take him in the third round of that summer’s Draft and there were some solid early returns. He was among the Single-A Florida State League’s leaders in home runs (17), slugging percentage (.428) and ISO (.191). He did not build off of that with a move up to High-A Jersey Shore in 2025, struggling to find a rhythm in a year interrupted by a nearly two-month stay on the injured list. He made up for lost time by hitting very well in the Australian Baseball League, winning Championship Series MVP honors as the Adelaide Giants won the title.

With a quick right-handed swing that generates plenty of bat speed, the 5-foot-9 Saltiban is capable of doing damage when he’s swinging well. He can make loud contact with over-the-fence juice mostly to his pull side and is capable of driving the ball to all fields. His overall approach unraveled in 2025, with his strikeout rate increasing and his walk rate shrinking, though he made more consistent contact in Australia.

Saltiban has plus speed and uses it efficiently on the basepaths, with 46 steals in 54 attempts in his career heading into 2026. He’s also back in the outfield, where he played in high school. The Phillies thought he had a chance to play second base, and while they’re not going to take him off the dirt entirely, they like how instinctive he looked in center field, where he played exclusively in Australia. That might take a little pressure off his bat and could be a better fit long-term.

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 55 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Saltiban was the best player from Hawaii in the 2023 Draft class. After he held his own as one of the youngest performers in the Draft League that summer, he was taken by the Phillies, who didn’t have a second-round selection, in the third round of that Draft, signing for an under-slot bonus of $602,500. After a brief debut in the Florida Complex League last year, Saltiban went to the Florida State League in 2024 and more than held his own, finishing in the top four in homers (17), slugging percentage (.428) and ISO (.191).

Strong and compact, Saltiban has more juice in his 5-foot-9 frame than many anticipated. It’s a quick right-handed swing with plenty of bat speed, and he swings with intent to do damage, regularly registering high exit velocities. Most of his home run pop has come to his pull side so far, though he can drive the ball to all fields. He absolutely punishes fastballs and has shown a solid approach at the plate, drawing a good amount of walks, though he’ll need to improve against spin.

A plus runner who went 22-for-24 in stolen-base attempts last year, Saltiban was an outfielder in high school, but the Phillies thought he had a chance to make it on the dirt and played second base exclusively in 2024. He’s probably a fringe-average defender right now, and though his athleticism points to him being average at the keystone in the future, he might get some reps in the outfield moving forward. He has as much upside as any hitter in the system.

2024

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50

Nearly all Hawaiian hitting prospects at some point work with Kaha Wong, Kolten and Kean’s father, and Saltiban was no different. The best player from the Aloha State in the 2023 Draft class, Saltiban held his own as one of the youngest players in MLB’s Draft League. He was nabbed in the third round by the Twins, no strangers to Hawaiian prep hitters having taken Kala’i Rosario in the fifth round of the 2020 Draft, making Saltiban the first from the state to go in the top three rounds since Shane Sasaki was a Rays third-rounder in 2019.

While Saltiban isn’t the biggest player at 5-foot-10, he’s strong and compact. There is a lot of confidence in his right-handed bat. He has a quick swing and excellent bat speed that was on display during his brief debut in the Florida Complex League last summer. The Phillies believe there’s going to be power to come as well as he adjusts to professional pitching.

An outfielder in high school, Saltiban now has the opportunity to show he can play on the dirt. He played shortstop in the FCL, and given that he’d never really played the position at any high level, he showed off good hands and a solid enough arm with his plus speed helping him cover ground. He’ll see most of his time at shortstop and second base, which could be his eventual home if the left side of second proves too much of a challenge, with perhaps him getting enough reps in the outfield to keep those skills sharp.

2023

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 45 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

The state of Hawaii has produced some very good hitting talent, with a guy like Shane Victorino signing out of high school and Kolten Wong going on to college before turning into a first-round pick. Saltiban followed in their footsteps and became the latest prep outfielder from the Aloha State to get taken in the early rounds after Kala’I Rosario (2020), Shane Sasaki (2019) and Micah Bello (2018) all went in the top five rounds of their respective Drafts. The Phillies took him in the third round and gave him just over $600,000 to sign.

A right-handed hitter, Saltiban has worked with Kaha Wong, Kolten’s father, who has helped him develop into an outfielder with a solid all-around toolset. He has the chance to really hit, with a quick swing and excellent bat speed, which could point to decent power in the future. Challenging himself by competing in MLB’s Draft League and attending the Combine ahead of the Draft, Saltiban held his own, putting up some good exit velocities and punishing fastballs, albeit in a small sample.

Saltiban runs and throws well, with a chance to play center field in the future. If he slows down as he matures, that arm would play well from a corner.

The state of Hawaii has produced some very good hitting talent, with a guy like Shane Victorino signing out of high school and Kolten Wong going on to college before turning into a first-round pick. Saltiban runs and throws well, with a chance to play center field in the future. If he slows down as he matures, that arm would play well from a corner. He would go on to the University of Hawaii if the Draft doesn’t go his way, but he’s done everything he can to increase his exposure, going from the Draft League to the Combine in June.
