Video scouting report »

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 40 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Todd Fitz-Gerald is the coach at national high school powerhouse Marjory Stoneman Douglas in South Florida. His older son, Hunter, is currently a first baseman in the Mariners' system. His younger son, Devin, is also an infielder who starred at Stoneman and, unlike his brother who was an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion University in 2023, has the chance to be taken at some point on Day 2 of the Draft this year.

As might be expected for the son of a coach, Fitz-Gerald’s tools play up thanks to his advanced feel for the game. He’s a switch-hitter who is a natural right-handed hitter, but some scouts feel his swing is actually better from the left side. His feel for the barrel could give him the chance to be an above-average hitter eventually, and his power could grow into average in the future. He has below-average pure speed, but it plays up because of his instincts and aggressiveness on the basepaths. His overall tools remind some of a Brendan Donovan type of player.

A shortstop in high school, most evaluators think he’ll need to change positions at the next level. He might profile best at second base, but he has enough arm to give third base a try, though that obviously puts more pressure on his bat to have more impact. He’s the type of player who is likely to always play above his tools thanks to his plus makeup and overall instincts, whether he starts his pro career now or heads to North Carolina State for college.

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 50 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Fitz-Gerald’s father, Todd, was the head coach at Stoneman Douglas HS in Florida and worked there with Roman Anthony, Jesús Luzardo and Coby Mayo. Under his father’s guidance, Devin Fitz-Gerald helped the school win four straight 7-A state titles, and that success helped guide him to the Rangers in the fifth round of the 2024 Draft. The infielder signed for well above slot at $900,000. Fitz-Gerald’s first full season was delayed by hamstring issues, but when healthy he hit .318/.423/.542 with six homers in 31 games in the Arizona Complex League. He was promoted to Single-A in June but suffered a season-ending left shoulder injury diving for a ball in his 10th game there. The Nationals acquired Fitz-Gerald as part of the return for MacKenzie Gore in January.

Fitz-Gerald is a natural right-hander but bats from both sides. He got significantly more opportunities to hit from the left in 2025 (147 plate appearances vs. 26), and scouts preferred his work there anyways. In his limited playing time in 2025, he ticked a number of boxes that the new Nationals front office will prioritize in the club’s development structure: among them, good swing decisions and the ability to put the ball in flight consistently. Even with average raw power, he could get to most of it and be a 15-20 homer threat because of his pull-and-lift tendencies.

Pre-Draft scouts expected Fitz-Gerald to get the most out of his tools, as one would expect for a coach’s son. For example, he will steal the odd bag, despite fringy speed. Fitz-Gerald is still searching for an everyday position after rotating through shortstop, second base and third in his pro debut, and he might fit best at the keystone with his average arm.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 45

Fitz-Gerald won four consecutive Florida 7-A state championships at Stoneman Douglas HS (Parkland), where his father, Todd, is the head coach and has mentored players such as Roman Anthony, Jesús Luzardo and Coby Mayo. The Rangers drafted him in the fifth round last July and lured him away from a North Carolina State commitment with a well-over-slot $900,000 bonus. Early-season hamstring issues delayed his pro debut in 2025, and he was traded to the Nationals in January as part of the return for MacKenzie Gore.

A switch-hitter, Fitz-Gerald is a natural right-hander, but scouts prefer his swing and power potential from the left side. He has good feel for the barrel and doesn't try to do too much at the plate, focusing on driving the ball from gap to gap. He's not especially physical and won't be a slugger, but his feel for the barrel could translate into solid hitting ability with 12-15 homers per season.

As with many coach's sons, Fitz-Gerald has a high baseball IQ that helps him get the most out of his tools. He has fringy speed but is a savvy baserunner who gets to grounders in the middle infield. A shortstop in high school, he's better suited for second base in pro ball with his range and average arm, and he has the quick hands to be effective on the double-play pivot.
