Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Vasquez signed for only $50,000 out of the Dominican Republic in 2023, and three years later, he’s proved to be a lesson in the power of patience. Vasquez sported an unseemly 13/24 K/BB ratio over 27 innings in his first pro season, forcing him to repeat the Dominican Summer League in 2024. With a better foundation under him, he found success stateside in 2025 with a 3.80 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 64 innings between the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Visalia. His 28.1 percent strikeout rate was 10th-best among 42 Minor Leaguers aged 19 or younger (min. 60 IP).

The 6-foot-2 right-hander sits 94-96 mph with his four-seamer and can run it up to 98 already, a big driver of the excitement on his profile. There’s room for even more power behind the heater as he enters his 20s, and he mixes in a sinker for a different fastball look too. His slider shows good sweep and spin, running away from righties with regularity. It flashes at least above average, but Vasquez’s command of it could use improvement with too many missing the mark. He added a kick-change that shows early promise but wasn’t often used in the California League.

Vasquez clearly has arm talent, the type that earns you long looks at starting. But until he establishes more consistent command of the breaking ball, his control is going to be a major question mark. Entering 2026, he’s walked at least 11 percent of the batters he’s faced at every level, and that number was up to 15.4 in his five Single-A starts. He’ll be the age of a college sophomore as he returns to Visalia this summer.

Vasquez was far from the biggest name the D-backs signed internationally in 2023 -- that was Jeremy Rodriguez ($1.25 million) who was traded to the Mets that same year -- but he’s been slowly building to one of the more exciting arms in the system. The 6-foot-2 right-hander spent the ’23 and ’24 seasons pitching in the Dominican Summer League before coming stateside this spring for his best performance with a 3.83 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings in the Arizona Complex League. He was promoted to Single-A Visalia in early August to round out his age-19 season.

Vasquez sits 94-96 mph and touches 98 already, and D-backs officials believe there’s still room for him to add more velocity into his 20s. He typically throws a four-seamer but has tinkered around with a sinker for a different look. His slider can show flashes of being a solid offering with good sweep and spin but can look more like a slurve at times. Vasquez added a kick change to his repertoire, and the offering has comes with nice diving action that helps him keep lefties at bay. There’s also the workings of a cutter that gives him a potential five-pitch mix.

The stuff is certainly there for Vasquez to start, but he’ll need to tighten up his control. He’s yet to walk less than 11 percent of batters in a year, and those bouts of wildness will be tested even more against full-season bats. The arm talent is there for him to be a valuable reliever, if it comes to that, but finding consistency in the breaking ball and working more in the zone will be key focuses as he continues to get starting opportunities.
