Scouting Report

2026

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Fernandez is yet another small, contact-oriented, switch-hitting infielder for the Guardians, having exceeded expectations after signing for $215,000 out of Venezuela in 2024. He looked overqualified for the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League last year as he hit .333/.398/.558 with six homers and 16 steals in 43 games before a brief cameo at Single-A Lynchburg.

This well-rounded skillset starts with strong contact skills. Fernandez is an aggressive swinger who puts the ball in play a lot, which causes him to rarely strike out -- or walk. He is undersized and doesn't have a ton of physical projection, but his line-drive approach could lead to 15 homers at maturation with added strength, since he's still plenty athletic. To date, he has been much more productive from the left side, partially a product of seeing far more consistent playing time against right-handers.

Fernandez has played across the infield and will likely continue to do so as the Guardians try to find his long-term home. His above-average speed that plays well on the basepaths is also an asset at second, short and third, and he has ample arm strength too. He has been somewhat error-prone and looks most comfortable to date at second base but has a real chance to stick at short.

2025

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 40 | Run: 55 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 40

Signed for $215,000 out of Venezuela, Fernandez looks like the best infield prospect from Cleveland's 2024 international crop. He impressed with his bat-to-ball skills during his pro debut in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League, then opened more eyes after coming to the United States in 2025. He led the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League in slugging (.558) while ranking sixth in OPS (.956) and seventh in hitting (.333).

Fernandez isn't very physical at 5-foot-9 and a listed 155 pounds, yet he compensates by swinging with all of his might and making regular contact from both sides of the plate. Despite his slugging exploits in the ACL, he's much more of a hit-over-power guy who laces line drives to all fields. He has added some strength since turning pro but likely will max out at 10-12 homers per season.

Beyond his ability to barrel balls, Fernandez also offers solid speed and arm strength. He has some basestealing instincts and the versatility to play all over the infield. He looked most comfortable at second base this summer while also getting the job done at third and shortstop.
