Scouting Report

Scouting grades: Fastball: 70 | Curveball: 45 | Slider: 60 | Cutter: 55 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 50

Signed for slightly above pick value in 2016 after the Cardinals took him in the bottom of the first round out of Mississippi State, Hudson made the jump directly to Double-A for his full-season debut, earning both Texas League All-Star and Pitcher of the Year honors before a late bump up to Triple-A Memphis. Returning to the level in '18, Hudson took home Pitcher of the Year honors in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, going 13-3 with a 2.50 ERA over 111 2/3 innings in the Redbirds' rotation. The performance earned Hudson his first big league callup in late July, and he emerged as a key late-inning reliever for the Cardinals down the stretch.

Despite his success as a starter, Hudson's sinker-cutter-slider combo had long made him a candidate for the Cardinals' bullpen before he finally got the call. He sat around 96 mph and topped out at 98 with his sinker in the big leagues while generating ground balls at an elite 68.3 percent clip -- the average 2018 MLB ground-ball rate was 43.2 percent -- much like he'd done throughout the Minors. Hudson's plus slider has excellent tilt to it, registering in the mid 80s, and his cutter sits in the low 90s with late glove-side slice. As a starter, Hudson also threw a curveball and a changeup, though neither pitch figures to be a major component in his bullpen arsenal.

Hudson doesn't fit into a neat box as a starter because he's a power pitcher with below-average control who doesn't miss a lot of bats, but he generates a ton of ground balls. At the same time, he's been nothing but durable and consistent in the role, and there's something to be said about his overall pitchability. But unless his control and command both improve, Hudson seems best suited for the type of high-leverage situations that he proved capable of handling in 2018.
