Fontenelle was a solid high school prospect in the Pacific Northwest who saw his senior year of high school wiped out by the pandemic. He stayed nearby to attend the University of Washington for his freshman year but transferred to McLennan Junior College a year later, earning JUCO third-team All-American honors. He was on the move again for his junior year, this time to Texas Christian. He had a big year with the Horned Frogs, finishing with an OPS of 1.112 and going to the College World Series. It was the kind of college performance teams like, and the Angels certainly noticed, taking him in the seventh round of the 2023 Draft and signing him for just about slot value.
A switch-hitter with a corner infield profile, Fontenelle shows flashes of being a solid performer on both sides of the ball. He hits the ball hard, with good exit velocities registered in his year at TCU. He’s long had a solid approach at the plate dating back to his high school days. He walked (15.3 percent) nearly as much as he struck out in 2023, and that helps him get to his power. The pop mostly comes from his left-handed swing, and it’s typically to his pull side, but he has the chance to drive the ball to all fields
While he’s a below-average runner, Fontenelle has a chance to stick at third, with decent actions and more than enough arm for the hot corner. His excellent instincts and anticipation are assets there as well. He played a lot of first base in college a year ago and even saw some time in left field, though the Angels had him playing third exclusively during his pro debut.
