Carrigg has been a starter for nearly all of his time at San Diego State, playing nearly every day as a freshman and then taking a big step forward by slashing .388/.426/.509 as a sophomore, earning first-team All-Mountain West honors. He dramatically improved his Draft stock by being one of the better hitters in the Cape Cod League, where he hit .329 and stole 15 bases.

Carrigg is a particularly intriguing prospect due to his athleticism and defensive flexibility to go along with his feel to hit. The switch-hitter tends to be a bit more in sync from the right side, but he shows an innate ability to make contact from both sides of the plate. He’s aggressive and has a solid two-strike approach, but more selectivity gives him the chance to be a better-than-average hitter. He showed some flashes of a little power this fall but hasn’t tapped into it in games as of yet.

A plus runner who can steal a base, Carrigg has shown ability at three up-the-middle positions. He’s natural in center field and has shown he can play a solid shortstop as well. But many scouts agree that his best value might come behind the plate as a switch-hitting backstop with a plus-plus arm, which was on display with throws 100 mph and harder from shortstop and the outfield at the Draft Combine, and athleticism. He’s played the outfield exclusively in 2023. Even so, his athleticism and feel to hit still have him in early-round conversations.

Over his three years at San Diego State, Carrigg showed off electric tools while touching every position on the diamond at least once between his time with the Aztecs and playing in summer leagues. After the Rockies took him No. 65 overall in the 2023 Draft, he began seeing time behind the plate, at shortstop and in center field while flashing a power-speed combination at the plate. He had a solid first full season with High-A Spokane, but things unraveled a bit with a move to Double-A, even as he still occasionally showed off his pop and wheels.

The conundrum with Carrigg has been how to allow him to keep the fire/aggression he plays with while helping learn to turn down the temperature just a little bit. A passive Carrigg won’t be successful, but high miss and chase rates led to a 27-percent strikeout rate in 2025 (vs. a just 8.4 percent walk rate). The switch-hitter has a flatter path and decent attack angle with his right-handed swing, but he doesn’t get that many at-bats from that side. He tends to tinker a lot with his left-handed swing and takes big hacks all the time. With an up-tempo style of play, the Rockies have worked with him on sticking with an approach and staying present pitch-to pitch.

Carrigg’s speed certainly plays, with 99 steals over the last two years, and his defensive assignments have been simplified by having him play the outfield exclusively in 2025, while still having him work out on the dirt not in games, and his double-plus arm racked up 18 assists last year. He’s an above-average defender in center, at least, one who has big league regular tools if he can find a little balance.

Sometimes you can have a Swiss Army knife and realize you don’t necessarily need to use every single thing it can do. That’s what the Rockies are learning about Carrigg after taking him in Competitive Balance Round B of the 2023 Draft. He had spent three years at San Diego State doing just about everything but selling hot dogs, showing flashes of all five tools while playing all over the diamond. He followed up a solid pro debut after signing by leading the High-A Northwest League in home runs (16) and finishing second in stolen bases (51) while whittling down his defensive homes.

A super high-energy player who gets some “hair on fire” evaluations, Carrigg is a switch-hitter who makes a ton of contact from both sides of the plate. There was some concern about his aggressive nature and hit tool and how it would translate to this level, but the transition has gone well so far as Carrigg doesn’t strike out much and even drew a decent amount of walks. There’s more pop than many expected, with most of it coming from the left side of the plate to his pull side. He also can turn singles into extra-base hits and doubles into triples -- he led the league in three-baggers, too -- with his plus speed clearly an asset and giving him at least 20-30 potential.

With one of the best arms in baseball, there were some who wanted to see if catching would work at this level, but that’s been shelved. He’ll keep getting some reps on the dirt at shortstop to maintain some versatility, but it should surprise no one if he shows up to Coors Field as an every day center fielder.

In his three years at San Diego State, Carrigg did everything but play first base (including some relief appearances on the mound). His flashes of incredible tools excited scouts even more than his versatility, really jumping on the Draft prospect map when he hit .329 with 15 stolen bases in the Cape Cod League in 2022. That put him on the precipice of first-round conversations, but while he wasn’t bad during his junior year, he wasn’t quite as dynamic and ended up going to the Rockies in Competitive Balance Round B. He signed for $1.3 million and then opened some eyes with a .350/.408/.600 debut between the Arizona Complex League and Single-A Fresno.

A switch-hitter who can make a ton of contact from both sides of the plate, Carrigg can be a little overly aggressive at times. There were some questions about how his bat would transfer to the pro game, but so far they’ve been unfounded, as he’s been athletic in the box and shown good bat speed with the ability to drive the ball. He’s a plus runner who should continue to be a threat on the basepaths.

Defensively, Carrigg has seen most of his time up the middle: at short, in center field and behind the plate. His double-plus arm is an asset in all three spots, as is his athleticism. His best position is center, with the Rockies cognizant that a plus arm is needed there in the vast expanse of Coors Field. He’s constantly on the attack on ground balls at short, and there’s confidence that would play if he got more reps there. He loves to catch, but it’s seen as the third-best option and the Rockies may not want to take his speed away by having him there full-time. Wherever he is, his hair-on-fire style of play should help him maximize his tools.
