The White Sox targeted Oppor, then a Wisconsin high schooler, for an over-slot bonus in the 11th round of the 2022 Draft but were beaten to the punch by the Athletics, who failed to sign him. He headed to Gulf Coast State (Fla.) JC, where Chicago landed him a year later with their fifth-round choice. Considerably raw when he turned pro, he has impressed with his stuff and improved polish during his full-season debut in 2025.

Oppor operates at 93-95 mph and peaks at 98 with his fastball, and he's doing a better job of holding his velocity and commanding his heater this season. His 78-82 mph slider features so much sweeping action that he has trouble throwing it for strikes or getting chases, but it generates a lot of empty swings when he lands it in the zone. He does a nice job of killing spin and pounding the zone with an upper-70s changeup that drops at the plate, and he's willing to throw it two or three times in a row to keep hitters off balance.

While Oppor's fastball doesn't feature a lot of life, he creates deception with a low three-quarters arm slot, low release height and somewhat upright delivery. He has cut his walk rate in half from 2024 to 2025 while showing the ability to miss bats with his entire arsenal. He'll need time to develop but is becoming one of the most promising young pitchers in the system.

Oppor was the best high school pitching prospect in Wisconsin a year ago, a lefty who offered athleticism and projection, along with a lot of rawness, on the mound. The A’s took a Day 3 flier on Oppor in the 11th round and using the return of the draft-and-follow, sent him off to Gulf Coast State, a junior college located in Florida’s panhandle. Oppor, who can sign with the A’s up until the start of this year’s Draft, made some progress on the mound but also showed he’s still very much a project, this spring.

Long and loose, Oppor came out of the gate looking like he might be taking a huge step forward, firing his fastball up to 98 mph. He hasn’t maintained that kind of velocity, though he’s still been consistently up to 95 mph and has shown an ability to maintain it throughout a start. His secondary stuff is a work in progress, though he’s made an effort to be a more complete pitcher and incorporate his slider and changeup more. The breaking ball is a bit of a slurvy spinner, thrown in the upper-70s, and he has some feel for a low-80s changeup.

A former basketball player, Oppor’s athleticism shows on the mound with things like an improved pickoff move. That gives evaluators faith that the southpaw can reach what is his considerable upside, even if it will take some time, instruction and strength/conditioning work. If the A’s don’t come to terms with him, he could be an intriguing high potential play should he re-enter the Draft.

Oppor is the best mound prospect to come out of the Wisconsin high school ranks since Connor Prielipp three years ago, though he's not in the same class as the fellow lefty who's a potential first-rounder after attending college at Alabama. He should become the highest Badger State prep pitcher taken since Mariners third-rounder Tony Butler in 2006. He's athletic, already can push his fastball to 96 mph and is very signable as a Gulf Coast State (Fla.) JC commit. 

While Oppor is still a work in progress, he sits around 90-92 mph with a fastball that plays up with the sink and run he creates from a low three-quarters slot. His best secondary offering is a sweeping upper-70s slider, though he doesn't trust it as much as his mid-70s curveball with more depth. He has had little use for a changeup to this point and has yet to show much feel for the pitch. 

The club that invests in Oppor will buy into his athleticism and his projection. Though he stands just 6-foot-1, he has room to add at least 20 pounds and create extension that adds to his deception. He needs more strength and consistency with his stuff and control and will require time to develop, but he's intriguing as a high school arm with upside who'll sign for a low-six-figure bonus.
